Prof. Marion Joppe

Prof. Marion Joppe, School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management, spoke to CBC News Toronto about the early effects of the new coronavirus on the Canadian economy.

Joppe noted that China is a key source of tourism to Canada, accounting for more than 700,000 visits to such destinations as Niagara Falls, Toronto and even the Norman Bethune house in Gravenhurst, Ont. She said those visits have dropped dramatically

“I’m sure they are not seeing anyone coming by these days,” she said.

Joppe researches the economic, social and environmental impacts of the tourism industry. She has examined the policy, planning and marketing of destinations as well as motivations for travel.
