The University of Guelph has named Jason Moreton as its new vice-president (external).

Moreton, currently associate vice-president (advancement) with U of G’s Department of Alumni Affairs and Development (AAD), will begin his new role on Aug. 14.

The announcement was made today by president and vice-chancellor Dr. Charlotte Yates, who chaired the search committee.

“Jason is a well-respected leader at the University of Guelph, and his experience prepares him well for this role,” said Yates. “This position is core to realizing the vision of our strategic plan. I look forward to working alongside Jason as he joins the leadership team.”

In his new role, Moreton will oversee the University’s departments of Alumni Affairs and Development, Communications and Marketing, and International Strategy and Partnerships.

Under Moreton’s leadership, AAD has seen a doubling of donations to the University. He led the cultivation of a values-driven team culture, strategic reorganization and development of the department’s strategic plan called Vision 2025.

Working with U of G leadership, faculty and fundraisers, he helped secure major gifts for the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, the Kim and Stu Lang Community Healthcare Partnership Program, the Morwick G360 Groundwater Research Institute, and the John F. Wood Centre for Business and Student Enterprise

“Building upon our rich legacy as an institution, we have a great opportunity to take the University of Guelph to the next level and transform the academic experience that we provide,” said Moreton.

“It is a pivotal time for the University of Guelph. Our talented researchers, faculty, students and staff are focused on helping to solve some of our biggest challenges. I am looking forward to working with others in this role to help elevate their work and build on the University’s global reputation.”

He will succeed Daniel Atlin, who will retire on Aug. 14. Atlin joined U of G as vice-president (external) in 2015.

Atlin played a key role in supporting the University’s goals for funding, reputation and enhanced collaborations. He led a refresh of the U of G brand, promoted the University’s digital engagement, and worked with Moreton to increase fundraising and alumni engagement.

“Daniel’s enormous contributions to the University and to the broader post-secondary education landscape will not be forgotten,” said Yates.
