U of G Advances Proposed New First-Year Residence Project

The University of Guelph will begin early site preparation on a proposed student residence on University-owned land at 78 College Ave. W starting March 3.

Planned for the corner of College Ave. W. and McGilvray St., the proposed project includes a new modern residence building designed to accommodate up to 1,250 first-year students. The development supports the University’s commitment to increase housing options for students and to strengthen the first-year experience through on-campus living.

“As our student population grows, the University of Guelph is focused on providing modern, accessible accommodation that supports academic success,” said Sharmilla Rasheed, vice-president, finance and operations. “This project moves us forward on a critical priority for students and their families.”

Tree removal timed to protect wildlife, support long-term canopy growth

The University will begin readying the site for construction, with the initial phase requiring the removal of around 300 trees and shrubbery within the development footprint. The work is compliant with City of Guelph tree regulations, the University’s own tree protection standards and the Migratory Birds Convention Act.

The timing of this work is scheduled ahead of the spring nesting period, to help protect birds and other wildlife, and will allow the University to proceed with the project once final approvals are received.

In accordance with the City of Guelph’s Private Tree Protection Bylaw, the University will replant native trees that support biodiversity and Guelph’s long-term canopy health to replace those removed.

The University will continue to share updates as the proposed project advances. Beginning in March, a dedicated project website will launch and serve as the central hub for updates as construction moves forward.
