Indigenous Recognition Week is back from January 15 to 19! Join the Indigenous Student Centre for a series of events celebrating First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures. Events take place throughout the week and are open to everyone.

Indigenous Recognition Week Events

  • Indigenous 101

    Join the Indigenous Student Centre to explore your existing understanding of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Enhance your vocabulary and comprehension of appropriate terminology and address assumptions, biases, and stereotypes you’ve heard about Indigenous people.

    • Monday, Jan. 15, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. (University Centre 442)
  • “Nosism” & “Acting Good” with Screen Writer Sonya Ballantyne

    Join the Indigenous Student Centre & the Indigenous Student Society for an evening of film and conversation as we screen “Nosisim,” an episode of “Acting Good,” and listen to Sonya Ballantyne speak about her life, creative work, and answer questions from the audience. Sonya Ballantyne is a Swampy Cree creative based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

  • Dreamcatcher Making Workshop

    Join the Indigenous Student Centre for an afternoon of learning, creating, and getting to know each other. Together you will learn about the meaning and purpose of dreamcatchers, and craft one too!

  • Métis Jigging with Alicia Hamilton

    Learn the history of Métis fiddling and jigging with Métis Knowledge Keeper Alicia Hamilton. Together, we will learn several jigging steps and jig to traditional Métis fiddle music. Please wear comfortable clothes and note there are no outdoor shoes or bags permitted in the Athletics Centre studio rooms.

  • ᑕᐅᑐᑉᐹ Tautuppaa | Long Looking Exhibit Tour

    Join curator Taqralik Partridge at the Art Gallery of Guelph for an exhibition tour and conversation about ᑕᐅᑐᑉᐹ Tautuppaa | Long Looking, an exhibition of artwork by Inuk artist Tim Pitsiulak, alongside artworks from the AGG permanent collection.

    • Friday, Jan. 19, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. (Art Gallery of Guelph)
