The University of Guelph Departments of Athletics and Physical Resources were presented with a City of Guelph Access Recognition Award at the June 23 meeting of City Council. U of G was one of several community organizations recognized by the city’s Barrier Free Committee.

The University departments were nominated for the award by committee member and U of G graduate Jane McNamee, BA ’76 and MA ’78. She and other athletic centre users requested that automatic door openers be installed to allow easier access to the women’s change rooms.

“There is a large population of women who use this facility,” she said. “Many of them have visible and invisible physical challenges. The new door openers have made an important contribution to women’s health.”
McNamee specifically credits athletics facility supervisor Andrew Godard for supporting the effort. Physical resources construction co-ordinator Justin Selby accepted the award on behalf of the University.
