U of G Among Top Canadian Research Universities in New Ranking 

The University of Guelph has ranked third among Canadian comprehensive universities in an annual ranking of top research institutions, maintaining its place in the top three for more than a decade. 

In the 2025 Research Infosource ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities, institutions are evaluated on criteria including sponsored research income, publication performance and research intensity. 

Overall, U of G ranks 17th among all 50 Canadian universities. 

U of G ranked second among comprehensive institutions for research income in 2025, maintaining its place from 2024. In total, U of G generated more than $175.5 million in sponsored research income, including grants, contributions and contracts.  

U of G is the top comprehensive institution for graduate student research intensity, averaging $56,000 per graduate student and ranks second for faculty research intensity, averaging $212,500 per faculty member. 

Among corporate research income, U of G ranks first, and in not-for-profit research income, the University ranks third.

When it comes to research publication, across a five-year period from 2019-2023, U of G ranks second for natural sciences and engineering research, third for health sciences research, and fourth for climate science research, among comprehensive institutions.  

The University also ranks among the top five comprehensive institutions for international AI collaborations. 

Comprehensive universities offer undergraduate, graduate and professional programs while also supporting research and innovation activities. 

The rankings are released by Infosource, a division of The Impact Group, an independent national consulting firm that tracks research activities of Canadian companies, universities and governments.
