The RBC Training Ground – the Canadian Olympic Committee’s official talent search – is coming to the University of Guelph.
On April 24, aspiring area athletes between the ages of age 14 and 25 who hope to one day compete at the Olympics will have the chance to show off their abilities through tests of speed, strength, power and endurance at the event.
The free event is one of several being held across the country. The aim is to spot athletes who might be suited to an Olympic sport – including ones they’ve never considered. Athletes identified with high potential receive funding and other support needed to one day compete for Team Canada.
The program launched in 2016 to ensure that high performance sports are accessible to prospects with the talent and will to compete.
Watching the event at U of G will be scouts from several national sport organizations, including Bobsleigh Skeleton Canada, Luge Canada, Freestyle Canada, Canoe Kayak Canada, Cycling Canada Cyclisme, Rowing Canada Aviron, Rugby Canada, Volleyball Canada and Speed Skating Canada.
The top 100 athletes across the country will be selected to compete in the RBC Training Ground National Final in the fall. Of those, 30 will ultimately be selected for athletic funding through RBC.
The free event at U of G’s Gryphons Athletics Centre, 175 Reynolds Walk, runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, April 24.
