The University of Guelph strongly condemns the Russian government’s violent invasion of Ukraine that has killed innocent people, destroyed homes and communities and left survivors fleeing for safety.
We are outraged by the continued death and destruction and stand in unwavering unity with Ukraine against this horrific and unjust attack.
The people of Ukraine have shown tremendous courage. Many civilians have taken up arms in defence of their country, including former Gryphon soccer player Svyatik Artemenko. Their bravery and loyalty are an inspiration to us all.
We also stand in support of all non-Ukrainian people in the country who are suffering and acknowledge the many Russian citizens around the globe who are denouncing the shocking actions of the Russian government.
This deeply troubling attack on sovereignty is having a ripple effect that is being felt all around the world. The University is among the many calling for a peaceful and immediate end to this unwarranted aggression. We strongly support all diplomatic efforts to restore democracy and peace.
Universities have a critical role to play in fostering important dialogue that advances a deeper understanding of complex issues and works to resolve serious conflicts happening around the world.
At U of G, we are working to ensure our own community members are supported. The University has connected with all students who have ties to Ukraine and Russia to provide guidance on how to continue with their studies during these difficult times and to offer resources and supports.
We have also shared resources with employees who have connections to Ukraine and to Russian communities, as we know this is a deeply concerning time for them as well.
We know that many in our community have been shocked, angered and saddened by the acts of violence happening in Ukraine. We want to remind all U of G community members that supports are available.
