University of Guelph student volunteers will head out to the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada in Puslinch, Ont., to help with property cleanup this weekend as part of the third Project Serve event of the year.

Project Serve is a community engagement initiative that sees U of G students volunteer their time with worthy local organizations. So far this year, students have helped restore sections of the boardwalk in Hanlon Creek Park and contributed to end-of-season cleanup at Priory Park Community Garden.

For this event at the donkey sanctuary, students were eager to take part and the volunteer sign-up list filled within 24 hours.

Volunteers will help tidy pathways and outdoor areas and help make wreaths to get the sanctuary ready for holiday visitors.

The event is being held in partnership with Shine Mental Well-being Awareness Week, with events organized by U of G Student Wellness to promote mental health and to provide students with resources to help support their mental well-being.

For more than 20 years, Project Serve has seen hundreds of U of G students volunteer with local service and not-for-profit organizations in the Guelph-Wellington community.

While putting the University’s “Improve Life” theme into practice, students gain volunteer experience and learn how to further engage with the community, while service organizations receive needed assistance and form connections with U of G students.

Students who want to learn more about Project Serve or find out about the next event are encouraged to follow U of G Experiential Learning on Instagram and Twitter, check for events on GryphLife or visit the Student Volunteer Connections webpage.
