This summer, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a possible link between a number of dog food brands and canine heart disease, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), which causes a dog’s heart to thin leading to congestive heart failure. This has led many pet owners to question which foods are best for their dogs.

In the article, the animal biosciences professor answers questions on a variety of topics from the potential connection of certain dog food to canine heart disease to whether its best to feed your pet organic food.

Shoveller is an expert in animal nutrition, protein and amino acid metabolism, and energy metabolism with the Department of Animal Biosciences at the Ontario Agricultural College. She is the chair of the Companion Animal Nutrition section of American Society of Animal Science and a board member of the Canadian Society of Animal Science.
