As we celebrate Asian and South Asian Heritage Month this May, U of G proudly joins communities across Canada in recognizing and celebrating the rich contributions of Canadians of Asian descent to our country.
Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity to honour the diverse histories, cultures, and achievements of Asian communities – East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, Central Asian and Western Asian – who have helped shape the social, economic and cultural fabric of our society. These communities have made significant contributions to our nation.
This year’s theme, “Asian Canadian Legacy: We Contribute. We serve”, highlights these remarkable and invaluable contributions as well as a legacy of resilience, resistance and dedication. We invite members of our community to learn more about this incredible legacy through McLaughlin Library’s Asian Heritage Month collection which includes a rich array of works highlighting Asian cultures, stories, heritages and identities.
Asian and South Asian Heritage Month is also a time to reflect on the ongoing challenges faced by Asian Canadians, including the rise in anti-Asian racism and discrimination.
We know many people in our community are shocked and saddened following the horrific attack at a Filipino Festival in BC this past weekend. This act of violence is deeply troubling and wrong. I offer sincere condolences and support to the families of the victims and the members of our campus family who may be feeling particularly vulnerable. If you are in need of support during this difficult time, you can find a list of resources below.
At U of G, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment where people of all backgrounds can thrive. This month, we invite students, staff and faculty to learn more about Asian cultures and histories, and engage in conversations about equity, inclusion and justice.
Let us take this time to learn from one another, uplift Asian voices, and continue building a campus community where everyone belongs.
Happy Asian and South Asian Heritage Month!
