Several media outlets sought the expertise of Ontario Agricultural College food economist Dr. Mike von Massow to discuss the Competition Bureau’s report on Canada’s grocery sector and a shortage of sriracha sauce.
Speaking to CBC Windsor, von Massow explained that the sriracha shortage stems from a scarcity of red jalapeno due to drought in the southern U.S. and Mexico. He said the shortage is just another example of extreme weather causing production disruptions in the food sector.
To discuss the report on grocery chain market consolidation, CBC News interviewed von Massow for About That. With Global News, von Massow spoke about international grocers in the Canadian marketplace.
A professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, von Massow researches retail and restaurant food demand, supply chain management, and value chain structure and performance.
