Research led by Dr. Rene Shahmohamadloo, a post-doctoral researcher in the College of Biological Science, that focused on the effects of algal blooms on Lake Erie fish was featured in The Globe and Mail .

The multi-year research found that the livers of fish in Lake Erie are filled with microcystins, which are toxic compounds produced by cyanobacteria in the algal blooms that are common in the lake.

Shahmohamadloo is an ecotoxicologist in the Department of Integrative Biology who is developing a genomics tool to monitor algal blooms. In 2022, he was awarded a Liber Ero fellowship.
