Lawrence Hill, a creative writing professor in the College of Arts, appeared on CBC Radio’s q to celebrate the 15th anniversary of his award-winning novel The Book of Negroes, as well as his contributions to Canadian literature.

“I had no idea it would meet the audiences that it has,” Hill said of The Book of Negroes’ success, adding, “I don’t really know how much influence I have […] but at least I can contribute to the quality of the heart and soul of the people who choose to read me.”

Hill is a professor in the School of English and Theatre Studies. His areas of expertise include global and Canadian Black history, slavery and freedom, human rights, migration, the search for home, mixed-race identity, blood as a marker of individual and collective identity, and the experiences of refugees.
