Being wary of vaccines isn’t new, and Dr. Maya Goldenberg, a vaccine hesitancy researcher in the Department of Philosophy, explained why to Vox.

Goldenberg said those hesitant towards getting vaccinated often believe their interests are not being met by governments, and that sources of mistrust need to be addressed to “get people on board with public health and public health measures.”

The author of Vaccine Hesitancy: Public Trust, Expertise, and the War on Science, Goldenberg specializes in the philosophy of science and medicine and has long examined why some people become wary of science.
