Food economist Dr. Michael von Massow spoke to two large news outlets over the weekend on food prices and beef supply.

Speaking to CBC News in Calgary, von Massow discussed how a potential strike at the Cargill facility near High River, Alta., would affect beef prices across Canada. He said a strike would “put more upward pressure on retail beef prices” but that its impact would be relatively moderate, as other beef products would be imported from the U.S.

In an interview with Global News, von Massow discussed why food inflation is notoriously volatile, particularly during the winter when many foods in Canadian grocery stores are imported.

A professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics in the Ontario Agricultural College, von Massow studies the structure and performance of food supply chains.
