Prof. Nigel Raine, School of Environmental Sciences, spoke to The Guardian newspaper in the U.S. about a new scientific review that found that light pollution is a significant but overlooked driver of the rapid decline of insect populations.

Raine was not involved in the report but he commented that light pollution could have significant ramifications at the insects. Still, he added, it’s not clear whether light pollution is as significant as other insect stressors.

Raine  holds the Rebanks Family Chair in Pollinator Conservation at U of G and is a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society and the Linnean Society of London. His research focuses on pollinator conservation and behaviour and the monitoring of wild pollinator populations in Ontario.
