Prof. Evan Fraser, the director of U of G’s Arrell Food Institute, spoke to the BBC’s World Business Report about how to increase global food production in a sustainable way.

Fraser was offering his thoughts in reaction to a report from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which warned that the world must halt damage to the land we live on to avoid catastrophic effects of climate change.

He said in a world where we are contending with both hunger and obesity, the world needs to invest in growing more nutritious foods. Local food systems need to be encouraged even while we make use of foods from around the world, he said, and government policies need to accommodate for the environmental costs of food production.

Fraser holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Food Security and studies food security, food prices, rural agricultural policy and how each is affected by climate change.
