In a CBC News-Windsor feature story, Prof. Mike Dixon in the School of Environmental Sciences discussed organic waste from cannabis plant production. The article explores the many environmental impacts associated with smoking cannabis.
Cannabis plants are fairly short-lived. After the buds are harvested, roughly 60 per cent of the plant is thrown away. Dixon said composting in cannabis growing can be improved.
Dixon told CBC News that he explained to the Senate of Canada last year that cannabis is not a toxic plant, arguing that the heat generated from composting removes or alters its cannabinoid compounds.
