Mike von Massow headshotProf. Michael von Massow spoke to CTV News on June 27 about misleading food labels.

He discussed labels such as “organic” and “GMO-free” and explained that making choices like these can often cause an increase in price without reason. He said if consumers are going to make a choice, make sure it’s an informed one.

A professor in U of G’s Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, von Massow said there is no evidence that non-GMO or estrogen-free products are safer or healthier for consumers, and that no meat is actually hormone-free since hormones occur naturally in animals as in humans.

Von Massow studies food value chains, sustainability and revenue management in the food and hospitality industry.
