Prof. Doug Goff, Food Science, was interviewed by CBC Radio’s The Current on April 21. Goff was discussing the claims made by one author that milk and all dairy products are an unnecessary part of the human diet. Goff studies dairy nutrition, and is currently conducting research on the effects of milk in a healthy diet on glycemia control and satiety.

Prof. Gary Ellis, Justice Studies at the University of Guelph-Humber, was interviewed by the Toronto Star on April 21. Ellis was discussing how Guelph-Humber student Mark Saunders was appointed chief of Toronto Police Services (TPS). Ellis, who served as Saunders’ commanding officer at TPS, discussed how Saunders made the time to talk with younger students in the program.

Prof. Emma Allen-Vercoe, Molecular and Cellular Biology, had her research on gut bacteria and its potential links to autism highlighted by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Autism Research Program. Allen-Vercoe and her research team analyze the microbes residing in the gut of children with autism. She has developed a novel system called the “Robogut” to better study these microbes in the laboratory.

Anita Stewart, food laureate at U of G, was interviewed by CBC News on April 18 for a story on trends with vegetables. Stewart discussed how vegetables are finding more prominence on Canadians’ dinner tables, and how new crops can flourish in places like Ontario. Stewart created Food Day Canada, a national event celebrating Canadian food that takes place each summer.

Prof. Madhur Anand, Environmental Science, had her recent book of poetry reviewed in the Toronto Star on April 18. The book, A New Index for Predicting Catastrophes, addresses issues such as climate change, the melting of the polar ice-caps and deforestation. Anand is a Canada Research Chair for Global Ecological Change.

Prof. Adronie Verbrugghe, Clinical Studies, was interviewed by Canadian Living for a story on nutrition for pets. Verbrugghe discussed the importance of a balanced diet, with meat and vegetables, for cats and dogs and said vegan diets for cats and dogs are not recommended. Verbrugghe is the Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Endowed Chair in Canine and Feline Clinical Nutrition at OVC.
