SUMMARY:Human Rights & You: Addressing Discrimination and Harassment on Campus
DESCRIPTION:This workshop encourages participants to move beyond the text of Ontario’s human rights legislation to understand how legal requirements affect our day-to-day work. \nHow do we identify when behaviour is harassment or discrimination? How do we know when behaviour rises to the level of a human rights violation? What is a reasonable response to a complaint in the circumstances? How do we prevent human rights violations from occurring in the first place? \nThis workshops provides tools and strategies to respond to each of these questions.

SUMMARY:Social Reproduction and One Health on the Farm: Feeding the World as if People Mattered
DESCRIPTION:Hear from anthropologist\, instructor and award winning science writer Dr. Andrew Flach. \nDr\, Flach is a renowned professor at Purdue University and will join the One Health Institute\, Guelph Institute of Development Studies and the Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement in an engaging talk that asks big questions around the challenges and complexities of feeding the world. \nAlthough farms are living spaces that anchor diverse economies\, the challenge of feeding the world is dominated by narrow questions of yield\, efficiency\, and cost-benefit analysis. \nCombining streams from world ecology\, critical agrarian studies\, and diverse economies thinkers\, Flach will discuss anthropological case studies from India\, Bosnia\, and the U.S. Midwest to ask how small-scale agriculture supports living communities in place: feeding the world as if people mattered. \nCentral to this approach is viewing efficiency not as a function of yields\, profits\, or commodities produced but of reproducing the conditions for local health and wellbeing. The talk will center small-scale agriculture as an engine of social reproduction\, the continual creation of communities of practice. This analysis both helps to re-value the rippling benefits of local farm systems and illuminate the profound damage of commercial plantations that emphasize commodity production.

SUMMARY:Jacobites\, Jacobins and Outlanders: Scotland in Cultural Memory
DESCRIPTION:This community event will feature presentations by faculty\, graduate students and Archival and Special Collections staff\, and is part of a wider partnership between the University of Guelph and Simon Fraser University. \nSpecial guest speaker Professor Viccy Coltman will present an exploratory and informal talk titled\, ‘Wartime: Scottish officers in military service\, 1793-1815’. \nIn the last thirty years\, the study of martial culture in Britain during the period of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars has been foregrounded in various humanities disciplines as scholars sought to reclaim academic military history with its traditional focus on campaigns\, commanders and tactics for cultural studies\, with its equivalent emphases on poems\, novels and plays. Despite the efflorescence of publications from history and English Literature\, art history has lagged behind\, and within the existing literature\, there has been no focussed study of Scottish officers and Highland regiments during this period of intense and prolonged warfare that lasted almost a quarter of a century\, or a generation. As Captain John Kincaid wrote in his Adventures in the rifle brigade in the Peninsula\, France and the Netherlands\, from 1809 to 1815\, (London\, 1830)\, ‘We had been born in war\, reared in war\, and war was our trade’. \nViccy Coltman’s work-in-progress seeks to write a cultural history of wartime which privileges Scottish commanders-in-chief of the British army including Sir Ralph Abercromby and Sir John Moore and the contributions of the 42nd\, 79th and 92nd Highland Regiments at major battles of Alexandria (1801) and Waterloo (1815). She situates a range and raft of temporalities at stake in this period and its visual and material representation\, both contemporary and posthumous. \nIn this illustrated talk\, Viccy offers an overview of her current book project\, focussing on a series of key images and objects which she has identified\, including understudied and unpublished martial portraits by Edinburgh’s leading portrait painter\, Henry Raeburn. \nViccy Coltman is a Professor of history of art at the University of Edinburgh. Her most recent book was Art and Identity in Scotland: A cultural history from the 1745 Jacobite uprising to Walter Scott\, (Cambridge\, 2019; paperback 2021). Her wartime book in preparation has been supported by fellowships from the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and at the Anne S. K. Brown military collection at Brown University. \nRegistration is available on the event website and early registration is encouraged. The event is free and open to the public. \nThe event is supported by the Centre for Scottish Studies at the University of Guelph\, the Research Centre for Scottish Studies at Simon Fraser University and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Connections Grant program.

DESCRIPTION:After months of work\, student teams involved in the 2021-2022 Project SOY Plus competition are ready to showcase their creative and potentially industry-altering plant-based products. Contestant entries will be open for viewing by the public and judged by industry representatives. Cash rewards of $2\,500\, $1\,000 and $500 will be awarded to first\, second and third place\, respectively in three categories. \nInitially introduced in 1996\, Project Soy served as a way to help maintain the momentum of the soybean industry\, raise the production and awareness of the crop\, and find diversified uses and markets for soybeans. Since then\, the program has expanded into Project SOY Plus and now includes a wide variety of plant-based products with the ultimate goal of making a positive and lasting impact on the environment. \nThe Project SOY Plus Finale takes in the University Centre on Friday\, March 25 with an open house to showcase projects from 10 a.m. until noon and an awards announcement between 12:30-1 p.m. The event is free to attend.
