SUMMARY:Hopper Lecture: Patricia Romero-Lankao
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Hopper Lecture “Sustainable Cities: Enhancing Sustainable Transitions Through an Understanding of Risk” presented by Professor Patricia Romero-Lankao. \nUrban areas can play a key role in the transformations that are required in humankind’s ways of understanding and responding to climate and sustainability challenges. Fulfilling this role\, however\, will require bringing together urban planners\, social and physical scientists\, business leaders\, engineers\, and others representing diverse knowledge and power domains. Such an undertaking creates its own set of seemingly intractable complications. This presentation begins with a brief description of the current state of an interdisciplinary understanding of how climate and urbanization contribute to intra- and interurban inequalities in risk. It will then examine across global to local scales\, how urban areas\, as places with unique social\, institutional and environmental histories\, shape risk. It will close with some remarks on how urban actors might enhance the capacity of urban populations to mitigate risk and adapt in fair and sustainable ways. \nPaty Romero-Lankao has a joint appoint as a Senior Research Scientist at the Transportation and Hydrogen Systems Center of National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the University of Chicago’s Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation. \nRozanski Hall\, Room 102

SUMMARY:Derry Dialogues: Improvisation for Social Change with actress Mary Walsh
DESCRIPTION:The pressing and complex problems of this age require creative and innovative solutions. Our success in responding to the problems we face depends on our ability to improvise\, to adapt to the situations in which we find ourselves\, to use the resources at hand to make right things transpire. At a time when diverse peoples and communities of interest struggle to forge historically new forms of affiliation across cultural and other divides\, the participatory and civic virtues of engagement\, dialogue\, respect\, and community-building inculcated through improvisational practices take on a particular urgency. On Thursday October 25th\, a diverse set of experts—including an award-winning actress and activist\, professors of improvisation\, a community engaged scholar and facilitator\, and members of a local improv education centre— will gather together to share inspiring stories of the power of improvisation for effective and lasting social change. \nPanel Members:\n\nMary Walsh\, Canadian actress (This Hour Has 22 Minutes)\, writer\, comedian and social activist\, Gemini Award winner\, Governor General’s Performing Art Award recipient\nThe Making-Box\, A hub for live comedy and improv education\, empowering individuals and businesses through improv training and their one-of-a-kind live comedy events\nDaniel Fischlin\, Recipient of the Premier’s Research Excellence Award (Humanities)\, chairs the Board of Silence\, a community art space in Guelph\, founding Director of the University of Guelph MA/PhD program in Critical Studies in Improvisation\nAjax Heble\, Director\, International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation and Professor of English\, University of Guelph\, Artistic Director Emeritus\, Guelph Jazz Festival\nElizabeth Jackson\, critical community engaged scholarship\, arts-based community making\, storytelling for social change\n\nThe Derry Dialogues\, made possible by the vision and support of Margaret and Douglas Derry\, embody the idea and values of interdisciplinary approaches to the big issues of our time. The speakers in this annual series reflect the values of the University of Guelph and are engaged in holistic\, rigorous\, and interdisciplinary engagement as much in the public arena as in the academy. \nRozanski Hall\, Room 101

SUMMARY:Food Science Seminar - A Scientist Walks Into a Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:Food Science Seminar guest speaker César Vega discusses non-obvious culinary uses of garlic. For those of us with a sweet tooth\, the addition of garlic to nougat\, angel food cake\, soufflés and mousses is nothing short of counterintuitive. It is in this\, non-obvious culinary use of garlic\, that the beauty of science makes us transform the kitchen into a laboratory. \nRozanski Hall\, Room 102

SUMMARY:Cancelled\, to Be Rescheduled: Truscott Lecture in Justice: What Does the Future of Justice Look Like?
DESCRIPTION:The College of Social and Applied Human Science presents the 2018 Truscott Lecture in Justice with guest speaker Senator Kim Pate. \nSenator Pate will present her talk “What does the future of justice look like?” addressing the future of Canada’s legal and penal system. All are welcome to attend. A reception will follow at the University Club. \n\nThe Truscott Lecture in Justice series is part of the Truscott Initiative launched at U of G in 2009 to commemorate the struggles of Guelph resident Steven Truscott and his family. \nTruscott is known across Canada for his decades-long battle to prove his innocence after the 1959 murder of his schoolmate Lynne Harper. He was wrongly convicted of the crime at age 14 and spent years in prison before his release in 1969. He was acquitted by the Ontario Court of Appeal in 2007. \nThe Truscott Initiative aims to improve understanding of the nation’s complex criminal justice system and to highlight how criminal justice intersects with other policy areas and broader conceptions of justice. \n\nRozanski Hall\, Room 102

SUMMARY:2018 Winegard Visiting Lectureship on International Development
DESCRIPTION:Marie-Claude Bibeau\, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie will present the 2018 Winegard Visiting Lectureship on International Development Jan. 22. Minister Bibeau will present her lecture titled “The Future is Female: Canada’s first feminist international assistance policy.” \nRozanski Hall\, Room 101 \nIn her capacity as Minister of International Development and La Francophonie\, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau has a mandate to refocus Canada’s international assistance on helping the poorest and most vulnerable people and on supporting fragile states. In June 2017\, after several months of consultations\, Minister Bibeau launched Canada’s new Feminist International Assistance Policy. This innovative new vision will make Canada a leader in the fight against poverty by prioritizing gender equality in the country’s international assistance programming. \nSupported by this new policy\, Minister Bibeau advocates for actions and initiatives that empower women and girls\, and she defends their rights. As well\, she is at the heart of Canada’s strategy for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development objectives both at home and around the world. \nHelping Canada exercise its leadership on global health issues\, she played a key role in ensuring that Canada hosted the Fifth Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS\, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Montréal in September 2016\, and that it will host the Women Deliver conference in Vancouver in 2019\, which will bring together 6\,000 people. \nFinally\, faced with the conflicts shaking the planet\, Minister Bibeau intends to fight for the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers. In the House of Commons and elsewhere\, she ardently defends the importance of respecting humanitarian principles: humanism\, neutrality\, impartiality and independence.
