SUMMARY:Truscott Lecture in Justice 2025 - Reimagining Canada's Prisons
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a compelling talk exploring the Canadian correctional system\, beginning with Howard Saper’s personal reflection on the wrongful conviction of Steven Truscott. This discussion will examine the realities of incarceration\, the impact of being “tough on crime\,” and pressing issues such as the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in prisons. Using recent cases—including Paul Bernardo’s prison transfer and the government’s response to Charter violations in segregation practices—the talk will highlight systemic challenges and potential reforms for a more humane and effective correctional system. \nThe lecture series is part of the Truscott Initiative launched at U of G in 2009 to commemorate the struggles of Guelph resident Steven Truscott and his family. \nTruscott is known across Canada for his decades-long battle to prove his innocence after the 1959 murder of his schoolmate Lynne Harper. He was wrongly convicted of the crime at age 14 and spent years in prison before his release in 1969. He was acquitted by the Ontario Court of Appeal in 2007. \nThe Truscott Initiative aims to improve understanding of the nation’s complex criminal justice system and to highlight how criminal justice intersects with other policy areas and broader conceptions of justice. \nRegistration is not required for this event.

DESCRIPTION:The prestigious Steacie Prize is named in memory of E.W.R. Steacie\, a physical chemist and former President of the National Research Council of Canada\, to whom much is owed for the development of science in Canada. The Prize is awarded annually to a young scientist or engineer in Canada. \nThis year’s recipient\, Dr. Asim Biswas’s and OAC’s School of Environmental Sciences will be hosting a campus-wide celebration (lecture and reception) for Dr. Biswas. His research on data-driven sustainable soil management aims to enhance the productivity and resilience of land-based agri-food production systems in an environmentally sustainable manner. \nApril 4th\, 3 to 4 p.m.\nCeremony and Public Lecture\nRichards Building\, Room 2529

SUMMARY:Tremaine Visiting Speaker's Series with Dr. Jennifer Heemstra: Why success is more likely when you’re willing to fail
DESCRIPTION:Mentorship seminar: “Why success is more likely when you’re willing to fail.”\nFailure can be a word that makes us cringe\, yet most of us appreciate its value…at least in some areas of our lives. If we’re playing sports or busy at a hobby and find ourselves faced with a situation where failure is possible (or even likely)\, often we don’t even hesitate before pushing forward and giving it our best try. Think about a soccer player dribbling the ball down the field and suddenly realizing they have an open shot on goal. Failure is possible\, but chances are they take the shot. Being willing to fail can feel easy when we’re having fun and the stakes are low\, but what about when the stakes are high? What about when you feel like your career depends on a certain outcome or result? In many cases\, failure can be objectively bad for your career. However\, being willing to fail can actually make you more likely to succeed. And with the right mindset\, your failure can even be what fuels your biggest success. We’ll dive into the psychology behind why this is and how we can become more open to failure and explore how that applies to research and innovation.

SUMMARY:Tracking a Silent Epidemic: Targeted Espionage Against Civil Society
DESCRIPTION:Public presentation by honorary doctorate recipient Professor Ronald Deibert\, Director of Citizen Lab\, University of Toronto \nWhile the Internet and other digital media offer enormous practical benefits to large segments of society\, they also create new and unforeseen risks. Over the last decade\, the Citizen Lab (based at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy) has tracked a growing wave of digital espionage against civil society\, including journalists\, human rights advocates\, academics\, lawyers and humanitarians. This wave of attacks is the product of several underlying causes: the spread of authoritarian practices; the emergence and growth of unregulated commercial surveillance technologies; and a lack of capacity and resources across civil society to defend themselves. Should these attacks continue to spread\, they could lead to a crisis of democracy. In this presentation\, Prof. Deibert will outline several prominent case studies from Citizen Lab’s targeted espionage research before addressing what might be done to mitigate the problems outlined.

SUMMARY:Evolutionary Technologies for Additive Manufacturing Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Enabling Advanced Solutions by Connecting Universities and 3D Printing Industries \nSince the introduction of 3D printing in the 1980s\, manufacturers have well understood its benefits in producing complex parts. Now\, many companies are turning to additive manufacturing. \nHowever\, to further realize the advantages of additive manufacturing\, these technologies require more discussion between academia and industry: \n\nReduce cost of entry\nReduce waste in building 3D-printed engineering compliant parts\nIncrease affordability\nReduce waste\nProduction savings on energy costs\n\nThis seminar will discuss these topics collaboratively between academia and industry to better understand current and upcoming technologies. \nRichards Building\, Room 3504

SUMMARY:Winegard Lecture in Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability and global clean tech expert Chris Turner presents “Tracking the Global Energy Transition” at the 2018 Winegard Lecture in Engineering. \nThe global economy is undergoing its greatest transformation since the dawn of the industrial age as it shifts from an energy regime built on fossil fuels to one run by clean\, renewable power. Award-winning author and sustainability strategist Chris Turner has been documenting this energy transition for more than a decade. His presentation combines insights from his bestselling books on the clean tech revolution\, The Leap and The Geography of Hope\, as well as analysis of the transition’s impact on the conventional energy economy drawn from his most recent book\, The Patch. Turner explains where the energy transition leads\, what our energy future looks like\, and what it means for the strategic decisions businesses and organizations need to make to survive and thrive in the new energy economy. \nRichards Building\, Room 2529
