SUMMARY:CCSAW Animal Behaviour and Welfare Seminar: What do we mean by "One Welfare"?
DESCRIPTION:The Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare presents the 2018 Animal Behaviour and Welfare seminar: What do we mean by “one welfare”? \nProfessor David Fraser\, University of British Columbia\, has maintained a strong interest in animals and animal welfare throughout his 46 years of teaching and research spanning farm\, companion\, laboratory and wild animals. He is currently Professor in the Animal Welfare Program of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. \nHe has served as a scientific advisor to many organizations including the the World Organization for Animal Health (Paris) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (Rome). He is the author of Understanding Animal Welfare: The Science in its Cultural Context (Wiley-Blackwell\, 2008). In 2005 he was appointed Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to science. \nOVC Pathobiology AHL\, Room 1800

SUMMARY:Welfare Concerns for Veal Calves: Housing\, Nutrition\, Antimicrobials and Disease Detection
DESCRIPTION:CCSAW Animal Behaviour and Welfare Seminar: Welfare Concerns for Veal Calves: Housing\, Nutrition\, Antimicrobials and Disease Detection by Bart Pardon\, Ghent University. \nIn Europe\, the veal industry was currently criticized for its very intensive antimicrobial use and high level of antimicrobial resistance. Rationally reducing antimicrobial use in the contemporary veal industry\, which inherently holds transport and co-mingling of animals at young age\, is a huge challenge. However\, in Belgium\, reductions of 50 per cent (total use) and 75 per cent (critically important antimicrobials) are requested by 2020. Simultaneously\, the industry must remain attentive to a growing concern for animal welfare in food animals. \nThis talk will provide an overview of how this pressure on antimicrobial consumption can be used as a momentum to improve veal calf welfare. \nOVC Pathobiology AHL\, Room 1800

SUMMARY:"The Genetic Revolution"Animal Behaviour and Welfare Seminar
DESCRIPTION:“The Genetic Revolution” presented by Teun van de Braak\, Geneticist\, Hendrix Genetics. \nThe first selective breeding of farm animals started with the domestication of their wild ancestors. Both conscious selective breeding (selecting for desirable traits) as well as unconscious selection have led to our modern breeds. If we look back into history we can identify some key periods where genetic selection played an important role in the evolution of our modern breeds: \nThe 17th and 18th centuries are known for the impressive selection on desired phenotypes. In the 20th century huge genetic increases in animal production efficiency were established by the recognition and the use of Mendel’s theories on inheritance\, as well as the development of high performance computers and the discovery of DNA. \nThe aforementioned have all led to significant changes in the animals’ physiology and needs\, but\, unfortunately\, not only always as a positive change. With the help of explaining the Hendrix Genetics breeding program for Laying Hens\, van de Braak will describe the steps that the company is taking to overcome the downside of the genetic revolution. \nOVC Pathobiology AHL\, Room 1800 \nMeet and Greet afterwards in ANNU 101/lobby – please join us!
