SUMMARY:One Health seminar - Mapping One Health initiatives in Latin America with Dr. Natalia Cediel Becerra
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Cediel Becerra is an advisor and mentor for the Colombian National Health Institute for the Frontline course of the field epidemiology training program on One Health\, and co-editor of the CABI One Health journal on One Health\, Gender and Feminism. She co-founded the Biodiversity and One Health community of practice\, a multidisciplinary group created to advocate for the inclusion of One health approach in the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans for Latin American countries. \nShe will be discussing how mapping stakeholders and initiatives is laying the groundwork for One Health implementation in Latin America and is a best practice for One Health governance. This will strengthen a pre-existing installed capacity for multisectoral cooperation mechanisms in Latin America and will help the region be better prepared to face future health emergencies. \nRegister to attend virtually or in-person.

SUMMARY:Breaking knowledge hegemony through transdisciplinary research practice
DESCRIPTION:Marsha Hinds Myrie will be presenting the next One Health seminar on Wednesday\, November 13. Marsha is an Educational Developer\, Anti-oppressive and Inclusive Pedagogies in the Office of Teaching and Learning at the University of Guelph. \nMarsha Hinds Myrie’s life and work are an embodiment of dualities and intersections. She is a Barbadian/Canadian citizen with an ancestral\, cultural\, and intellectual home in Africa. Her career unfolds\, sometimes spectacularly and sometimes confusingly\, at the intersections of activism and education. She is a public intellectual steeped in the Caribbean intellectual tradition and critical studies. \nMarsha spent 23 years developing an advocacy model to address the issues of underprivileged groups of women in Barbados and the Commonwealth Caribbean. The major focus of the work is to develop and encourage the use of victim-defined services for women and girls affected by various types of gender-based violence while at the same time removing the burden of eradicating violence from women and victims by forcing greater attention to systemic oppression and a stronger lobby in policy spaces.

SUMMARY:One Health seminar with Faisal Moola: Indigenous food sovereignty and the stewardship of “berried” landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Faisal Moola\, Dept. of Geography\, Environment & Geomatics\, will discuss the importance of wild berries to the food sovereignty of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and globally; the threats to their ecological and cultural integrity from climate change and extractivist capitalist resource development; and how Indigenous Peoples are advancing their own forms of conservation governance for the stewardship of this important cultural keystone food species.

SUMMARY:One Health Seminar with CERC Chair Dr. David McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:The title of Dr. McCarthy’s seminar is “Using a One Health Approach to Understanding and Mitigating Risks to Swimmers.“ \nDavid McCarthy leads a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS)\, the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) and the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC).  The team aims to understand how pathogens from human and animal waste move through urban water cycles\, how they interact with humans and how to reduce the health risks they pose. \nTo do this\, McCarthy’s lab is developing novel technologies to detect pathogens and their sources in near real-time\, designing a “lab-on-a-chip” device to enable pathogen detection in the field\, and modelling how humans interact with sources of contamination and reduce pathogen loads in the environment. McCarthy’s team emphasizes solutions that are easy to use\, low cost\, open source and open hardware\, to encourage and enable their use in all parts of the globe.

SUMMARY:Reviving Ghosts: An Isotopic Investigation of Madagascar’s Extinct Lemurs
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Anthropology is pleased to host this free lecture by Dr. Brooke Crowley (PhD)\, a professor in the Department Geology and Anthropology and the Geology Graduate Director at the University of Cincinnati. She investigates ecological interactions among living and recently extinct animals (including humans) using stable isotope biogeochemistry. Her interests include niche partitioning\, conservation biology and Quaternary paleoecology. She is particularly interested in the causes and consequences of recent extinctions\, and the ecological repercussions of habitat fragmentation and degradation.

SUMMARY:CCSAW Animal Welfare Research Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare (CCSAW) Annual Research Symposium features the work of U of G faculty and students\, covering disciplines from animal biosciences and veterinary medicine to philosophy and psychology. Via talks and a competitive poster session\, the Symposium covers a range of topics related to animal welfare science\, animal ethics and the role of animals in society. It provides a forum for faculty and students to share research results\, techniques and ideas\, and to foster discussion and collaboration among the many interested individuals and research groups from across campus and other institutions. \nThe Symposium includes lunch and coffee breaks. Donations are encouraged and accepted so the Centre can continue to offer this great networking opportunity. Donations of $15 for students and $25 for faculty\, staff and visitors is suggested.

SUMMARY:Welfare Concerns for Veal Calves: Housing\, Nutrition\, Antimicrobials and Disease Detection
DESCRIPTION:CCSAW Animal Behaviour and Welfare Seminar: Welfare Concerns for Veal Calves: Housing\, Nutrition\, Antimicrobials and Disease Detection by Bart Pardon\, Ghent University. \nIn Europe\, the veal industry was currently criticized for its very intensive antimicrobial use and high level of antimicrobial resistance. Rationally reducing antimicrobial use in the contemporary veal industry\, which inherently holds transport and co-mingling of animals at young age\, is a huge challenge. However\, in Belgium\, reductions of 50 per cent (total use) and 75 per cent (critically important antimicrobials) are requested by 2020. Simultaneously\, the industry must remain attentive to a growing concern for animal welfare in food animals. \nThis talk will provide an overview of how this pressure on antimicrobial consumption can be used as a momentum to improve veal calf welfare. \nOVC Pathobiology AHL\, Room 1800

SUMMARY:"The Genetic Revolution"Animal Behaviour and Welfare Seminar
DESCRIPTION:“The Genetic Revolution” presented by Teun van de Braak\, Geneticist\, Hendrix Genetics. \nThe first selective breeding of farm animals started with the domestication of their wild ancestors. Both conscious selective breeding (selecting for desirable traits) as well as unconscious selection have led to our modern breeds. If we look back into history we can identify some key periods where genetic selection played an important role in the evolution of our modern breeds: \nThe 17th and 18th centuries are known for the impressive selection on desired phenotypes. In the 20th century huge genetic increases in animal production efficiency were established by the recognition and the use of Mendel’s theories on inheritance\, as well as the development of high performance computers and the discovery of DNA. \nThe aforementioned have all led to significant changes in the animals’ physiology and needs\, but\, unfortunately\, not only always as a positive change. With the help of explaining the Hendrix Genetics breeding program for Laying Hens\, van de Braak will describe the steps that the company is taking to overcome the downside of the genetic revolution. \nOVC Pathobiology AHL\, Room 1800 \nMeet and Greet afterwards in ANNU 101/lobby – please join us!
