DESCRIPTION:The first mandate of Dr. Carabin’s Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology and One Health is to highlight the importance of the One Health approach during crises and create an understanding of the epidemiological challenges encountered in identifying the underlying causes of population health status or health behaviours. \nThe second mandate is to incorporate advanced epidemiological methods to investigate complex One Health issues in Canada (Axis 1) and in low-income countries (Axis 2). \nDuring this presentation\, some of the challenges encountered during the first mandate and the solutions that will be incorporated into the second mandate of the CRC will be discussed.

As scientists\, politicians and concerned citizens scramble for solutions to the catastrophic effects of a warming world\, is it time to explore the controversial topic of geoengineering? Intervention Earth is built around Dyer’s interviews with one hundred climate scientists from around the globe\, including the leading figures in the geoengineering field. But Intervention Earth is about more than technological mega-projects. Dyer devotes ample space to the many innovative ideas on offer\, but there is no get-out-of-jail-free card. In his talk\, Dyer outlines a whole portfolio of techniques and technologies—and a lot of hard\, thankless work— that will be needed to keep the planet hospitable for humanity.

DESCRIPTION:Talk Title : The One Health Approach: Governance and Operationalization Challenges.\nDiscussion Panelists -Dr. David McCarthy\, Dept of Civil Engineering\, Monash University\, Brisbane Australia\n-Dr. Marc Habash\, School of Environmental Sciences\, University of Guelph \nThe concept of One Health has been around for centuries\, but the official term was adopted in 2004. Despite its devastation for human health\, the COVID-19 pandemic had the advantage of raising awareness regarding the One Health approach globally. A “One Health High Level Expert Panel” (OHHLEP)\, launched in June 2021\, proposed a definition for the One Health approach on Dec 1\, 2021\, at the same time as a special World Health Assembly session was taking place to initiate discussions about a potential pandemic treaty. In April 2022\, the World Health Organization\, the World Organization for Animal Health\, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the UN Environment Programme signed a memorandum of understanding to form a quadripartite group to tackle One Health challenges through a legal agreement. However\, despite all this international support the hardest challenge remains the operationalization and demonstration of the added-value of the approach. In this seminar\, I will present a few elements of the history and global governance of One Health\, but also give an example of its operationalization in a study we conducted in Burkina Faso\, which also came with many governance and political challenges. \nSTUDENT POSTER SESSIONS-5:00-7:00PM ; keynote and panel discussion 7:00-9:00 p.m . DESCRIPTION:– This event has been cancelled –  \nInstitute of Gender and Health (IGH) Guelph Chapter (CIHR) \nIGH oversees a Canadian network that builds awareness and capacity in sex- and gender-based analysis among trainees conducting health research in Canada. The network connects health research trainees from across Canada to exchange ideas and resources about the integration of sex and gender in health research. The Trainee Network currently has chapters at 15 institutions\, each including a trainee leader and a senior mentor. \nThe Guelph IGH Chapter is having its inaugural meeting on March 25. We invite upper year undergrads\, graduate students\, post-docs and faculty who incorporate sex- and/or gender into their health research currently\, or who are thinking about taking this approach in their work to join us. At our meeting\, we will have the opportunity to share our research interests with each other\, and then discuss how a Guelph chapter of the IGH can be most beneficial to those of us interested in this type of scholarship. DESCRIPTION:Anne Croy\, a DVM graduate from U of G’s Ontario Veterinary College and former faculty member in OVC’s Department of Biomedical Sciences\, will present the 2019 Schofield Memorial Lecture: “Opportunities and decisions create careers and define self.” \nCroy has been widely recognized for her identification of uterine Natural Killer cells and her definition of their roles in promotion of early\, post-implantation uterine angiogenesis. \nFrom 1985 to 2004\, Croy was a professor in OVC’s Department of Biomedical Sciences. Between 2004 and 2016\, she held the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Reproduction\, Development and Sexual Function at Queen’s University where she became an adjunct and emeritus professor in 2017. Croy was elected a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2012 and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2017.

You are required to wait 15 minutes at the clinic after your shot. \nAll residents of Ontario over six months of age are eligible to receive the annual influenza vaccine at no charge. The vaccine is available at U of G’s Health Services\, at your family physician’s office\, through Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health or other public health units throughout the province. \nIt is important to get the vaccine every year as the vaccine changes annually to protect against the Influenza A and B strains determined to be most prevalent that year. \nThe Nov. 7 flu shot clinic takes place in OVC’s Lifetime Learning Centre Room 1713 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a seminar by Dr. Roger Haston\, President of the Institute for Animals. With nearly 20 years’ experience in animal welfare\, including his roles as Executive Director at the Animal Assistance Foundation and Chief Analytics Officer at PetSmart Charities\, Dr. Haston has become an internationally recognized leader in data\, trends\, metrics and analytics conveyed through impactful and approachable storytelling. \nAnimal welfare is changing rapidly\, as the types and complexity of problems we now face have less to do with sheltering and more to do with people\, pets and the communities they live in. Many of the metrics and constructs that we have used in the past no longer reflect the work being done. Further\, animal welfare has struggled to engage and incentivize governmental agencies to spend money on animal-related issues. This is in part due to a narrative that is narrow in perspective and lacking more holistic aspects of community development. \nThe concept of social capital was developed by Robert Putman in 1969 to understand how to improve and strengthen democracy in Italy. Since then\, the field has been expanded into economics\, community development and many social issues. In this talk we will re-examine animal welfare through a social capital perspective to understand how this framework might allow a more robust pathway and understanding for the future of animal welfare and how to create a broader community model around pets and people.

DESCRIPTION:University of Toronto professor Anthony Doob\, who was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2014 for his research on criminal justice\, will reflect on criminal justice policy during the Conservative years and how it might change under the new Liberal government. \nThe lecture series is part of the Truscott Initiative launched at U of G in 2009 to commemorate the struggles of Guelph resident Steven Truscott and his family. \nTruscott is known across Canada for his decades-long battle to prove his innocence after the 1959 murder of his schoolmate Lynne Harper. He was wrongly convicted of the crime at age 14 and spent years in prison before his release in 1969. He was acquitted by the Ontario Court of Appeal in 2007. \nThe Truscott Initiative aims to improve understanding of the nation’s complex criminal justice system\, and to highlight how criminal justice intersects with other policy areas and broader conceptions of justice. \nLocation: OVC Lifetime Learning Centre\, Room 1714
