SUMMARY:Intro to GIS using ArcGIS Pro: Data Skills
DESCRIPTION:Registration will open 4 weeks before the workshop. \nIn this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcPro\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology\, and labelling\, how to filter data\, and how to create a finished map. \nArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. ArcGIS Pro is the desktop mapping software of ArcGIS. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude / longitude\, census locations\, name of a place\, etc.). ArcPro is available for download to the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. \nPlease note: \nYou must use a University of Guelph login to self-register for this workshop. If you don’t have a U of G email address\, please contact library@uoguelph.ca to request registration for this workshop. When you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless you confirm otherwise with the instructor. This workshop allows limited attendees. If you are suddenly not able to attend\, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer your spot to someone on our waiting list. \nYou must have ArcGIS Pro installed on your computer prior to the workshop AND you must log into ArcGIS Online to create a U of G account in order to access ArcGIS Pro. You will not have time during the session to install the software or troubleshoot account issues. You must attend this workshop on a computer (not a mobile device). We cannot troubleshoot software or installations during the session. If you are unable to install the software please contact the presenter so we can give your seat to someone on the waiting list. You will find you are able to participate more fully if you have a 2nd screen on your computer. \nIf you have any issues installing ArcGIS Pro please contact the IT Help Desk. \nPlease note: this workshop will take place online. A reminder email with the meeting link will be emailed to you 24 hours before the workshop.

DESCRIPTION:Registration will open 4 weeks before the workshop. \nIn this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcGIS Online\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology and labelling\, how to manually add data to your map\, and how to access analysis functions. \nArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude / longitude\, census locations\, name of a place…). ArcGIS Online can be used in your browser on any computer and is available to the University community by requesting an account. ArcGIS Online has less mapping capability than ArcPro but is easier to use and to learn. We’ll learn some GIS fundamentals and how to get started using ArcGIS Online. \nPLEASE NOTE: \nWhen you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless otherwise confirmed with the instructor. This workshop has limited attendance available. SUMMARY:Domesticating Wildness: Snow Leopard Tourism and Evolving Multispecies Relationships in the Indian Himalayas
DESCRIPTION:The next Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) Webinar will feature Karine Gagné\, Associate Professor\, Department of Sociology and Anthropology\, University of Guelph. \nHow does snow leopard tourism reshape multispecies relationships? In the Indian Himalayas\, this tourism has gained traction\, attracting visitors eager to see the elusive snow leopard. This growth is tied to changing relationships between local communities and the endangered animal\, which has become a stable source of income. As the local agro-pastoral economy declines\, residents are increasingly viewing the snow leopard as an object of interest rather than a nuisance. This presentation draws on interspecies mutuality scholarship to explore how the success of this niche tourism extends beyond financial incentives. It examines evolving multispecies relationships\, from developing expertise in spotting the animal to the emotions generated by these encounters. \nThis event will be hosted virtually via Zoom. Please register to receive the meeting link.

SUMMARY:One Health seminar - Impacts of anthropogenic disturbances on parasitic diseases of fish
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Whitney Preisser\, Assistant Professor at Kennesaw State University\, Georgia\, USA will speak on “Using historical ecology to measure the impacts of anthropogenic disturbances on parasitic diseases of fish.” \nDr. Preisser will discuss two projects using fluid-preserved specimens to determine the impacts of climate change\, heavy metal pollution\, microplastics\, and reservoir damming on parasitic diseases of fish over long time spans. First\, using more than 600 marine fish specimens collected between 1880 and 2019 in the Salish Sea\, she tracked changes in parasite communities over time and investigated the potential for heavy metal pollution and sea surface temperature to have caused the observed changes. Second\, using over 500 freshwater fish collected between 1999 and 2016 in Georgia\, she explored the effects of reservoir damming on the diversity and abundance of parasitic infections. Using a subset of those fish\, she also quantified the prevalence of microplastics and nanoplastics in digestive tracts and searched for links between plastics and parasites. \nThis seminar will be online via Teams. Register to attend.

SUMMARY:Composting for Gardeners - Vermicomposting (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Vermicomposting is a way of using earth worms to compost organic material. One benefit of this method is that it can be done in the home using special bins that require a very small space. \nThe course will introduce you to the equipment needed including some inexpensive DIY options. It will help you select the right kind of worms and show you how to maintain them to keep them healthy. We’ll review ways of harvesting the vermicasts – the worm poop – and explain how it should be treated for best results in the garden. \nAt the end of this course you will know the basics of taking care of your new pets and how to resolve any problems you might have. \nIf you are going to take this course it is a good idea to also take Introduction to Composting for Gardeners. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person.

SUMMARY:Composting for Gardeners - Composting Piles\, Bins and Drums (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The previous workshop provided information about the composting process. This workshop is more hands on and looks at various methods for completing both hot and cold composting. Hot composting is the traditional method using one or more bins. This is a great system that makes faster compost\, but it is impractical for smaller gardens. Various plastic bins and drums are more suitable there. We’ll have a look at various commercial and DIY systems. \nAt the end of this course you will be able to select the right composting system that meets your requirements and you will know how to start the process\, care for it\, and what to do with the finished compost. \nIf you are going to take this course it is a good idea to also take Introduction to Composting for Gardeners. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person.
