SUMMARY:Gaelic in Scotland\, Gaelic in Canada: Challenges\, Prospects\, Connections
DESCRIPTION:Inaugural Lecture: Scotland-Canada Academic Partnership\, delivered by Professor Robert Dunbar\, University of Edinburgh \nGaelic has been spoken for perhaps 1\,500 years or more in Scotland\, and for over 250 years in what is now Canada. Many Scots are not aware of how widely spoken Gaelic once was in Scotland\, and most Canadians are unaware of the fact that at the time of Confederation\, Gaelic was likely the third most widely-spoken language in Canada. It is now a highly vulnerable minority language in Scotland\, and is in an even more precarious position in Canada. Many factors help to explain the decline\, but neglect by\, and sometimes hostility of governments played an important part in the story. Over the last fifty years in Scotland\, and more recently in Canada—specifically\, in Nova Scotia—things have changed. In this presentation\, in addition to tracing the historical trajectory of the language in both Scotland and Canada\, Professor Robert Dunbar will explore efforts by individual activists\, communities and governments to support the language and its speakers in both countries. Prof. Dunbar will also explore the ongoing links between these two sea-divided language communities\, and what they can learn from each other\, and we can learn from them.

DESCRIPTION:With the election of a new federal government\, we have invited leaders in civil society organizations to discuss what will and should be key priorities for action around ensuring rights and justice of and with women and girls with disabilities. \nWe will examine how the Global Disability Summit declaration to ensure 15% of development assistance funding to people with disabilities can be addressed in Canada. We will consider whether Canada’s leadership of the G7 in 2025 offers openings to move forward on gender\, disability\, and inclusion. We will explore how the recently released recommendations for action by Canada from the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on Medical Assistance in Dying Track 2 legislation\, arms exports\, and the representation of women with disabilities can be effectively addressed by the government. \nThe panel will also highlight how women and gender-diverse people with disabilities are playing a leadership role in these areas. \nRegister to receive the Zoom link.

DESCRIPTION:The next Canada India Research Centre for Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) Webinar will feature Karine Gagné\, Associate Professor\, Department of Sociology and Anthropology\, University of Guelph. \nHow does snow leopard tourism reshape multispecies relationships? In the Indian Himalayas\, this tourism has gained traction\, attracting visitors eager to see the elusive snow leopard. This growth is tied to changing relationships between local communities and the endangered animal\, which has become a stable source of income. As the local agro-pastoral economy declines\, residents are increasingly viewing the snow leopard as an object of interest rather than a nuisance. This presentation draws on interspecies mutuality scholarship to explore how the success of this niche tourism extends beyond financial incentives. It examines evolving multispecies relationships\, from developing expertise in spotting the animal to the emotions generated by these encounters. \nThis event will be hosted virtually via Zoom. (Note:  you cannot register for Dissertation Writing Retreat through this Library Workshop Calendar.) \nThis intensive one-week (Monday to Friday\, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.) program is designed to help graduate students accomplish their thesis writing goals and accelerate their time to completion. Participants are expected to participate all 5 days. \nDWR offers graduate students focused and supported individual time to write\, as well as lessons on writing issues and access to one-on-one support with writing experts. SUMMARY:One Health seminar - Impacts of anthropogenic disturbances on parasitic diseases of fish
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Whitney Preisser\, Assistant Professor at Kennesaw State University\, Georgia\, USA will speak on “Using historical ecology to measure the impacts of anthropogenic disturbances on parasitic diseases of fish.” \nDr. Preisser will discuss two projects using fluid-preserved specimens to determine the impacts of climate change\, heavy metal pollution\, microplastics\, and reservoir damming on parasitic diseases of fish over long time spans. First\, using more than 600 marine fish specimens collected between 1880 and 2019 in the Salish Sea\, she tracked changes in parasite communities over time and investigated the potential for heavy metal pollution and sea surface temperature to have caused the observed changes. Second\, using over 500 freshwater fish collected between 1999 and 2016 in Georgia\, she explored the effects of reservoir damming on the diversity and abundance of parasitic infections. Using a subset of those fish\, she also quantified the prevalence of microplastics and nanoplastics in digestive tracts and searched for links between plastics and parasites. \nThis seminar will be online via Teams.
