SUMMARY:Broadband to the Farm and the Politics of Rural Connectivity in America
DESCRIPTION:Hear Prof. Christopher Ali\, Media Studies (University of Virginia) discuss his current research project\, Farm Fresh Spectrum: Rural broadband and the future of connectivity. Ali’s research examines the complicated terrain of rural broadband policy in the United States. Farm Fresh unpacks the politics of broadband policy\, asking why millions of rural Americans lack broadband access and why the federal government\, and large providers\, are not doing more to connect the unconnected. It explores different business structures\, focusing on the importance of co-operatives to provide rural broadband. It contemplates the technologies of rural broadband—from the “future proof” fiber\, to the tried-tested-and-true digital subscriber line (DSL) and the rollout of the advanced cellular networks of 4G\, LTE\, and 5G. It examines the uses of rural broadband\, focusing on precision agriculture. Finally\, it analyzes the policies of rural broadband\, interrogating issues of regulatory jurisdiction\, authority\, legitimacy\, and subsidy. \nThis seminar is organized by the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) Speaker Series and R2B2 Project with the support of Food from Thought\, a partnership of the University of Guelph and Canada First Research Excellence Fund.

SUMMARY:Gender Pronouns and Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Please join us June 28 to kick off the Office of Teaching and Learning’s Instructional Inclusivity Seminar Series!  \nOffice of Teaching and Learning Presentation and Discussion: \nJune 28\, 1969. Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera (two trans women of colour\, drag queens and LGBTQ activists and heroines) threw the first brick (Johnson) and the first bottle (Rivera) during a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village that ignited the Stonewall riots and ushered in the revolution that we now commemorate and celebrate each June as Pride. On the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots\, join educational developer Tommy Mayberry as she presents her talk “Gender Pronouns and Teaching” with the University of Guelph campus and community.  \nSession Abstract: \nWe’ve all done it. Said the wrong pronoun\, used the wrong name\, and/or otherwise referred to someone in some sexed/gendered way and immediately wished we could take it back. (And\, guess what? We are all going to do it – we’re all human; we all make mistakes.) So\, how can we as instructors forestall these mistakes in our teaching practices and activate in ourselves an inclusive ideology for gender and sexed identities in our classrooms? In this session\, we’ll start with some grammar and linguistic history to identify where these words come from in our language and how they work (and don’t work)\, and then we’ll discuss impacts and impasses of privilege and inclusivity to get us into some strategies for positive engagement with gender pronouns and teaching. \nRegister here:  http://reg.opened.uoguelph.ca/?event_id=2615 \nTommy’s Bio: \nTommy Mayberry (he/she/they) is an Educational Developer in the Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) and Co-Chair of the QUofG Network at the University of Guelph. As an academic drag queen\, Tommy works and researches from an embodied standpoint to explore\, both individually and intersectionally\, gender\, pedagogy\, performance\, language\, social media and reality TV (to name but a few) and has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants\, the most recent of which is the University of Guelph’s Learning Enhancement Fund (LEF) for “The Science Library Project/Le projet de bibliothèque scientifique” (2019-2020). Tommy’s partner is experimental digital media artist Tommy Bourque (together\, they’re “the Tommies”)\, and their family is complete with their 13-year old Pekingese-Chihuahua\, Sam.
