SUMMARY:Introduction to Open Educational Resources Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In a recent survey of University of Guelph undergraduate students\, 57 per cent of learners reported that they do not purchase the required resources for their courses\, a finding that has serious implications for student success\, learning outcome achievement and course design. \nOpen Educational Resources (OERs) provide an alternative to commercially published textbooks and other course materials. OERs are not only free of cost\, but they are editable and adaptable to ensure that you’re able to provide the best curricular content for your course. \nParticipants will leave this workshop with an understanding of OERs\, Creative Commons licensing\, and how these resources can benefit the teaching and learning experience. \nRegister at lib.uoguelph.ca.

SUMMARY:"Toward a Pedagogy of Effective Thesis and Dissertation Feedback Processes" Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Research shows that graduate students view feedback from their supervisors and committee members as critical to their successes with theses and dissertations—and not just with the content they are writing about\, but with the actual writing and processes of writing as well. Providing feedback on multiple ongoing theses and dissertation projects\, however\, can be a challenging\, time-consuming and even frustrating process for faculty. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll draw on research from writing studies and the scholarship of teaching and learning to discuss effective approaches to mentoring and supporting your graduate students via feedback on their thesis and dissertation projects. Together with our workshop participants\, we will offer strategies for providing effective feedback under time constraints and will identify approaches and tools that your graduate students can use (and that you can use with your graduate students) to address and engage with your feedback as they write\, revise and polish their theses and dissertations. \nThis workshop will also be an opportunity for both new faculty and seasoned supervisors and committee members to share ideas\, successes and failures with one another as we collectively work toward embodying and sustaining effective thesis and dissertation pedagogy processes at U of G. \nCoffee and snacks will be provided. \nRegister at lib.uoguelph.ca.

SUMMARY:Broadband to the Farm and the Politics of Rural Connectivity in America
DESCRIPTION:Hear Prof. Christopher Ali\, Media Studies (University of Virginia) discuss his current research project\, Farm Fresh Spectrum: Rural broadband and the future of connectivity. Ali’s research examines the complicated terrain of rural broadband policy in the United States. Farm Fresh unpacks the politics of broadband policy\, asking why millions of rural Americans lack broadband access and why the federal government\, and large providers\, are not doing more to connect the unconnected. It explores different business structures\, focusing on the importance of co-operatives to provide rural broadband. It contemplates the technologies of rural broadband—from the “future proof” fibre\, to the tried-tested-and-true digital subscriber line (DSL) and the rollout of the advanced cellular networks of 4G\, LTE and 5G. It examines the uses of rural broadband\, focusing on precision agriculture. Finally\, it analyzes the policies of rural broadband\, interrogating issues of regulatory jurisdiction\, authority\, legitimacy and subsidy. \nThis seminar is organized by the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) Speaker Series and R2B2 Project with the support of Food from Thought\, a partnership of the University of Guelph and Canada First Research Excellence Fund.
