SUMMARY:Black History Month: Barrington Walker -The Role of the Church in Shaping 'Modern’ Black Canada
DESCRIPTION:As part of Black History Month 2020\, this talk by Barrington Walker will consider the history of the church in Black Canada and its role in affirming community bonds and forging Black freedom from early emancipation until the emergence of a “secular” civil rights movement. \nThrough a case studies approach\, and by drawing upon published scholarship and community histories\, Walker will highlight stories of the Black Church from the 18th to the 20th century. Walker will explore how the church has anchored Black Canadians in the context of a settler racial colonial state and created new identities and cultures in a place where full freedom and citizenship have been and continue to be elusive. This talk suggests that careful consideration of the Black Church alerts us to the possibilities and the limits of Black belonging in Canada. \nSee more Black History Month events supported by U of G. \nPresented in collaboration with the University of Guelph’s Cultural Diversity Office.

SUMMARY:Data Skills Workshop: Data Analysis - Manipulation in R using dplyr and tidyr
DESCRIPTION:R is a programming language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. This workshop will introduce you to the dplyr package which makes tabular data manipulations easier by using a set of functions to extract and summarize insights from your data. The tidyr package works well with tidy to quickly convert between different data formats (long v. wide) for graphing and analysis. \nThis workshop builds upon the material presented in Part 1: Into R and RStudio. This is not an introductory workshop and requires participants to have taken Part 1 or have experience with R. Please bring a laptop for your own use during the workshop. \nBefore attending the workshop\, please complete the following: \n\nDownload and Install R\nWindows User\nMac User\nInstall RStudio Desktop\n\nWhat is R used for? SUMMARY:Data Skills Workshop: Getting Data - Intro to Twitter Archiving Using Tags
DESCRIPTION:Twitter\, like other social media channels\, contains a wealth of information typically pertaining to current events in real-time. This information is valuable to researchers in all disciplines. This workshop will offer participants an easy to use\, yet powerful tool to capture and dig into the data. \nTAGS is a free Google Sheet template that works with your Google and Twitter accounts to set up and run an automated collection of search results on Twitter. \nParticipants need to have a Twitter and Google Account set up ahead of the workshop. \nRegister on the library’s website.
