He once said: \n“The most important thing I learned as an academic is that disagreement is almost always in good faith\,” he said. “I think we have to approach disputes about rights or the Charter with a great deal of humility and we have to start with the position that however strongly we may feel\, we might be wrong.”\n– Justice Huscroft\, 2016 \nRegistration not required. SUMMARY:Imagining a More Just University
DESCRIPTION:How can we create more just academic spaces that eliminate barriers to access and ensure equity for everyone in the University community? \nIn this hybrid event\, we will explore how to create more just academic spaces that reduce/eliminate barriers to access and ensure equity for everyone in the university community. We are interested in this topic generally\, and also specifically as it relates to the University of Guelph. \nCreating more just academic spaces has long been a critical topic\, but feels increasingly pressing as we navigate several overlapping injustices structured by the pandemic\, systemic racism and colonialism\, (hetero)sexism\, ableism and economic inequality\, among others. \nDrawing on expertise local to the University of Guelph and the surrounding communities\, this event will both illuminate specific challenges\, and imagine and discuss promising practices moving forward. Panelists will include: \n\nDr. Adam Davies (they/them)\, Family Relations and Applied Nutrition\nDr. Roberta Hawkins (she/her)\, Geography\, Environment and Geomatics\nOmorowa Eguakun (she/they)\, Ontario Public Interest Research Group – Guelph\nJena-Lee Ashley (she/her)\, Vice President External\, Central Student Association\nNicole Walker (she/her)\, President\, Central Student Association\n\nLearn more at https://csahs.uoguelph.ca/events/2022/11/imagining-more-just-university

SUMMARY:Oceans and Migration in Works of Dionne Brand and Lawrence Hill
DESCRIPTION:University of Bremen – University of Guelph Lecture Series 2022\nProfessor Kerstin Knopf | University of Bremen \nIn their fiction both Dionne Brand and Lawrence Hill write about the history of enslavement of African people\, the experience of African Canadian communities\, the forging of African diasporas and Black Atlantic cultures. Hence\, their literature often revolves around sea voyages\, forced migration of the enslaved\, and migration of people across oceans and seas\, not seldom forced by natural and economic crises and exploitive or totalitarian regimes. In this talk\, Prof. Knopf will discuss the novels At the Full and Change of the Moon and The Illegal and their representation of oceans and migration. \nMore info: https://www.uoguelph.ca/arts/BG-lectures \nLearn more at: https://www.uoguelph.ca/arts/BG-lectures

SUMMARY:Thinking Spaces – Jazz Libre: The Musical-Political Praxis of the Quebec Left
DESCRIPTION:The International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) and the University of Guelph Department of History are excited to present historian Eric Fillion. A part of IICSI’s “Thinking Spaces” speaker series\, Fillion will showcase his groundbreaking research between 2:30-4 p.m. on March 12 in MacKinnon Building Room 308. A listening session led by Fillion will follow from 4:15 – 5:30 p.m. These events are open to the public and free of charge. \nFillion’s presentation\, entitled “Jazz Libre: The Musical-Political Praxis of the Quebec Left\,” will explore the work of Jazz Libre\, a musical collective formed in 1967 that sought to transform Quebec society in the wake of the Quiet Revolution. During its eight years of existence\, Jazz Libre encouraged students\, artists\, political activists and working families to participate in the liberating experience of free jazz. \nA postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto\, Fillion has published his research into this distinct moment in Canadian history in his book JAZZ LIBRE et la révolution Québécoise. For this particular research presentation\, Fillion has also curated a collection of songs and sounds to complement his talk—a fitting decision for this self-described “instinctive sound archivist\, forever eavesdropping on the past.” \nFillion’s presentation is part of the 14th annual Creative Music Symposium (March 9-13)\, a series of performances\, lectures\, and forums presented by the Music Students’ Association in the School of Fine Art and Music at the U of G. Taking place across campus and at Silence (46 Essex Street)\, this year’s symposium focuses on wellness and the future of music. \nThe keynote for this year’s symposium\, presented by Prof. Marta McCarthy\, is entitled “Wellness for Musicians in Six Songs.” Other events include a Music Vocational Fair\, a workshop on Music Therapy by practicing music therapist Mary Parkinson\, and several presentations from graduate students in the Critical Studies in Improvisation graduate programs. The full schedule for the Creative Music Symposium can be found online. \nMore information about Eric Fillion’s presentation and listening session can be found on the IICSI’s website.
