SUMMARY:Thinking Spaces: Andrew Goldman\, “The Cognition of Musical Improvisation: Theories and Experiments”
DESCRIPTION:Improvisation is a challenging topic to study using the theories and methods of cognitive science owing to the difficulty of defining it\, and the diversity of improvisatory practices. I share my theoretical frameworks for engaging this challenge as well as the results from some behavioral and neuroscientific studies. Ultimately\, I draw upon improvisation as a case study for exploring the difficulties of using science to understand music more generally. \nMore About the Presenter:\nAndrew Goldman is a music theorist and cognitive scientist\, and is currently Assistant Professor in Music Theory and Cognitive Science at Indiana University\, where he also directs IU’s Music and Mind Lab. He received his PhD in 2015 at the Centre for Music and Science at the University of Cambridge. He was in the inaugural cohort of Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience at Columbia University\, and also held a postdoctoral position with the Music\, Cognition\, and the Brain initiative at Western University before joining the faculty at Indiana University. \nHis research considers how we can (and cannot) use scientific methods to learn about musical perception and cognition in theory\, and he also designs and conducts behavioral and neuroscientific experiments on music perception and cognition. Goldman’s research has focused on improvisation in music and dance\, and more recent work has addressed the perception of musical form\, melodic contour\, metrical perception\, and embodiment in music. His work has been published in both music and psychology journals\, and has been presented at national and international conferences including the Society for Music Theory\, the International Conference for Music Perception and Cognition\, and the American Psychological Association. Goldman is also a pianist and composer. His original musical\, “Science! The Musical” provides an alternate platform to explore the worlds of music and science. Musical numbers include “The Interdisciplinary Rag\,” “The Real World\,” “Publish or Perish\,” and more!

SUMMARY:"The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" - Presented by the University of Guelph Theatre Studies Department
DESCRIPTION:The Theatre Studies Department at the University of Guelph presents “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.” The production is quickly approaching on November 21\, 22\, and 23 at 7 p.m. and will be held in the Arts Research Centre (ARC) Theatre in the MacKinnon Building at the University of Guelph. \n“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” by Jay Presson Allen\, based on and adapted from the novel by Muriel Spark\, is a timely exploration of a brilliant and charismatic teacher who has full control over her students\, her “crème de la crème.” She pushes them into “heroic action\,” which\, as it turns out\, has dire consequences for some. Set in 1930s Scotland against a backdrop of rising political tensions\, this relevant work prompts the audience to consider issues of trust and leadership. \nThis production is directed by School of Theatre\, English\, and Creative Writing faculty member and renowned Canadian playwright Professor Judith Thompson. \nPerformance and production work is by third and fourth year Theatre Studies students. The production also features Stephanie Jones\, a Theatre Studies PhD student in the title role of Jean Brodie. Stephanie brings many years of professional experience to the role. Professor Thompson is assisted by PhD student Erin O’Brien. \nWe hope you can join us for one of the three evening performances. \nThe ARC Theatre is an 80 seat performance space with flat access and proximity to an accessible washroom. The majority of the seating is tiered with limited floor-level seats. \nThis performance contains bright lights\, lighting shifts\, and some sudden noises. It also contains themes of control and power\, grooming and bullying behaviours\, references to war and death\, and depictions of intimate/sexual contact as well as references to sexual and physical abuse and historical opinions and beliefs. \nIt runs just over two hours including a 15 minute intermission. \n“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French\, Inc. \nFor tickets\, more information\, and to support the production\, please visit the Eventbrite page.

SUMMARY:Live @ImprovLab: Susanna Hood Trio and Sarah Belle Reid
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday\, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. (ET) for the series premier of Live @ImprovLab\, featuring the Susanna Hood Trio and Sarah Belle Reid in an inspiring double bill. This performance hosted by the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) will take place in person at ImprovLab\, MacKinnon 108 at the University of Guelph. \nTickets are $15 or pay what you can (by donation) and available online through IICSI’s Eventbrite page. While tickets will be made available at the door\, attendees are encouraged to reserve tickets ahead of time. \nThe double bill will be preceded by a panel discussion moderated by Marie Zimmerman in which the artists will contextualize the work they will be presenting\, and share insights about the role that improvisation plays in what they do. \nMore about the event:\nIICSI’s new Live @ImprovLab concert and performance series serves to showcase touring artists working in a variety of improvisatory idioms. Curated by IICSI Director Dr. Ajay Heble (Founder and former Artistic Director of the Guelph Jazz Festival and 2023 Killam Prize winner)\, the new series\, says Heble\,“aims to celebrate live improvised performances and to spotlight our beautiful new venue.” \nTiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal-based bandleader and vocalist-dancer\, Susanna Hood\, along with the superb Tkaronto/Toronto-based musicians\, Tania Gill (piano) and Kayla Milmine (soprano saxophone) bring poet Judith Malina and composer Steve Lacy’s 1995 “Packet” suite to life through sound and movement. These audacious new arrangements blur the lines between what is heard and what is seen. Heart-felt\, yet unsentimental\, these eight songs hold no punches as they bring voice to a woman’s later life\, grappling with imperfection\, sexism\, paradox\, grit\, beauty\, regret\, invisibility\, death\, and love. \nIn Sarah Belle Reid’s improvisations and compositions\, musical notation is often experimental and graphical—an invitation to explore a new sonic universe. This spirit for exploration has led her to collaborate with musicians and artists of all genres\, including experimental electronic musician David Rosenboom\, thereminist Carolina Eyck\, and baroque-pop artist Julia Holter. Reid recorded trumpet and electronics on Holter’s 2019 record Aviary\, and recently wrapped up an extensive tour throughout North America\, Europe\, and Australia as a member of her band. Reid’s own compositions have been premiered and performed by a number of renowned musicians\, most recently pianist Vicki Ray and trumpeter Nate Wooley. In 2017 her composition “Flux” for amplified percussion quartet won the Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Percussion Quartet’s Next Wave Composer Initiative.

He once said: \n“The most important thing I learned as an academic is that disagreement is almost always in good faith\,” he said. “I think we have to approach disputes about rights or the Charter with a great deal of humility and we have to start with the position that however strongly we may feel\, we might be wrong.”\n– Justice Huscroft\, 2016 \nRegistration not required. Please feel free to send any questions to pols.undergrad@uoguelph.ca \nWHEN: Thursday\, November 23\, 2023\, 2:30pm – 4:00pm\nWHERE: MCKN 019 (Interdisciplinary Hub)
