SUMMARY:Opening Reception Paul Nadeau: Gravel is the New Gold
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of the exhibition Gravel is the New Gold\, featuring the work of artist Paul Nadeau. Drawing together the visual language of cottage-country ephemera with references to practices of measuring\, mapping\, and surveying\, Nadeau’s hyperreal paintings incorporate trompe l’oeil to underscore a certain perception of the Canadian wilderness that has both depended on and accelerated the continuous dispossession of Indigenous lands for resource extraction and leisure. \nThis exhibition represents the culmination of two years of focused work in the University of Guelph’s Master of Fine Arts program. The Art Gallery of Guelph’s annual exhibitions of graduating MFA students are presented in conjunction with the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph.

SUMMARY:Summer Art Exhibitions Launch
DESCRIPTION:You are invited! Join us Thursday\, June 13 at 6:30 pm\, for the launch of the Art Gallery of Guelph’s summer season featuring three exhibitions: Yours in Native Spirit: Richard Bedwash\, Catherine Chan: Fractures and Fragments\, and What Remains. All three exhibitions address ideas and issues that are exceptionally timely – from the work of Richard Bedwash\, the Anishinaabe artist tied to murals that remain at risk within the aging structure of the abandoned Guelph Correctional Centre\, to Catherine Chan’s engagement with questions of the Anthropocene\, and the work in What Remains that draws attention to the humanitarian crisis playing out on the southern border of the United States. \nAccessible parking and a limited number of free parking spots are available in the lot beside and behind the gallery with an entrance off Gordon Street\, just north of College Avenue. Additional parking is available in the University of Guelph campus parking lot P23 with access from College Avenue and MacDonald Street. \nImage detail: Richard Bedwash\, Sweat Lodge\, 1977\, acrylic on canvas. SUMMARY:Big Ideas Lecture and Art Exhibition Launch: What Remains
DESCRIPTION:Launching the ArtsEverywhere festival organized and presented by Musagetes\, join the artists of the El Paso-based What Remains Collective (Dr. Adriana Alvarez\, Iris Morales\, Mabel Weber\, and Monica Lozano) for a guided conversation about documenting the stories of immigrant families as well as the belongings abandoned by individuals over the course of attempts to cross the political border into the United States. \nThe conversation will be followed by an opening reception at the Art Gallery of Guelph for the collective’s exhibition What Remains\, that brings together photography\, video\, and La Trenza – an evolving installation that braids together the belongings and stories of humans in transit\, immigrants\, asylum seekers\, displaced families\, men\, women\, and children who have experienced the journey of crossing a border\, from the heavily militarized to the nearly invisible. Representing individual experiences through the objects they carry with them\, this piece is made of materials recovered from the desert of Ciudad Juarez that were found half buried. \nImage detail: Monica Lozano\, The Cemetery\, 2022\, digital photograph. SUMMARY:Stories as a Nurse and a Nomad
DESCRIPTION:Available in person AND online. \nJoin the AGG Volunteer Association as they welcome Renata Mares for a talk and presentation at 1 p.m. on Feb. 22. An AGG volunteer\, Renata works as an adaptation consultant and nurse educator. With a focus on public health\, Renata has been committed to assessing and improving the way the Canadian healthcare system functions and supports its workers\, especially nurses\, in the face of a healthcare crisis and pandemic. With a career that has taken her to four continents and thirty countries\, she lived and worked in Nunavut and the Yukon between 2015 and 2020\, a residency that transformed how she thinks about creative practice and wellbeing\, art and science. \nLiving within Inuit communities and engaging in community projects offered Renata direct engagement with artists in the North and their work across varied media\, as well as a deeper appreciation of the personal and social roles art plays. Living among northern communities also allowed Renata to build conversations with artists\, collecting not only art\, but stories of their motivation. Renata will speak about these experiences that have shaped her insight into building trust and resilience among individuals and communities\, as well as the profound impact of artistic exploration on health\, healing\, and wellbeing. \nJoin in person at the Art Gallery of Guelph\, or virtually on Zoom.

SUMMARY:In-person panel discussion: Kept Alive Within Us art exhibition at the AGG
DESCRIPTION:Featuring artists Sandra Brewster\, Ésery Mondesir\, and Farihah Aliyah Shah in dialogue with moderator Starasea Camara\, this panel discussion will explore themes and issues raised in Kept Alive Within Us\, a group exhibition at the Art Gallery of Guelph curated by Sally Frater that explores various rituals related to the everyday and the natural environment through art by those who hold cultural ties to the Caribbean. \nDrawing its title from Edouard Glissant’s Poetics of Relation\, the installation explores how ancestral ontological ways of knowing emerge throughout daily domestic actions and encounters with the natural world. At a moment when the Caribbean is under threat as a result of climate change and global warming\, KAWU illustrates how encounters in domestic\, gastronomical\, ecological\, and spatial realms constitute ongoing acts of remembrance and resistance. \nThis is a free event and open to the public. A reception will follow the panel discussion. \nImage detail: Deborah Jack\, When the evidence of our wounds were reborn as petals: Evidence #20 (detail)\, 2009\, 36” x 36″\, film still. SUMMARY:The Third Scenario Artist Potluck Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators
DESCRIPTION:Join Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators recipient Holly Chang and artists Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka\, Joy Wong\, Lan “Florence” Yee\, and Justin Ming Yong for a free community meal. \nChang and the artists will each bring and share a dish that speaks to their own personal narratives and negotiations of belonging\, collectively exploring ideas at the heart of the exhibition The Third Scenario. The program is geared towards adults and teens\, though all are welcome. Please share allergies and dietary considerations; vegan and gluten-free options will be available. This is a nut-free event. Registration is required for this program as space is limited. \nThe Third Scenario is inspired by theorists such as Homi Bhabha and his concept of the Third Space that represents the interstices of colliding cultures\, and John and Ruth Useem’s work investigating Third Culture Kids – those raised in a culture and nation separate from their parents’ culture and country of nationality for a significant part of their development. With a focus on the expression of hybridity\, the exhibition refuses to settle in one world or another\, crossing boundaries of identity and geography while transcending binary dichotomies of cultural heritage.

SUMMARY:Black History Month: Sandra Brewster's 'Token|Contemporary Ongoing' Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:On display at the Art Gallery of Guelph and highlighted during Black History Month\, Token | Contemporary Ongoing is an exhibit conceived by Sandra Brewster as artist-in-residence at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Focusing on the belongings of acquaintances and friends from Toronto’s Caribbean diaspora\, physical objects are combined with representations of these tokens rendered in the form of large-scale photographs\, photo transfers and audio recordings of personal descriptions by their owners. The exhibit runs Jan. 22 to Apr. 12. \nTouching on themes of migration\, familial bonds\, memory and memorialization\, the body of work also challenges how we determine which objects are of value and\, by extension\, worthy of our attention. \nSee more Black History Month events supported by U of G.
