The different habitats found in The Arboretum should allow us to find a variety of spring ephemerals. This in-person session should provide participants with the opportunity to practice identification skills learned in the virtual session. \nFee: $60 (plus HST) per person\, per session if booked prior to the early bird deadline of April 28. DESCRIPTION:Mask\, proof of vaccination and screening required to attend this event. \nPonds teem with a diversity of prey and predators that conduct their lives largely unseen below the surface. The online portion of this workshop will introduce you to some of these fascinating animals. \nThe importance of vernal pools will be highlighted. These temporary ponds are crucial to the reproductive success of various creatures including wood frogs\, fairy shrimp and spotted salamanders. \nThe outdoor workshop will begin with an examination of several species of pond organisms that Don Scallen will have on hand. We’ll then visit one of the Arboretum ponds to see what else we can discover. Dip nets and containers to briefly house the creatures will be supplied. \nFee: $55 (plus HST) per person\, per session if booked prior to the early bird deadline of April 15\, 2022. After the early bird date the fee is $65 plus HST per person. Please note that the virtual program on April 20 is included in this In-Person Pond Workshop. We’re all facing these challenges together and looking for solutions. They will be accompanied by Global Affairs representatives Stephen Potter; Director Agriculture and Food Systems and Anatoliy Shatkovskyy\, Senior Analyst. \nThe activity is part of IFAD’s visit to Canada to strengthen the alliance between Canadian universities\, Global Affairs Canada and IFAD. The aim is to link Canadian universities to the work IFAD does in developing countries. SUMMARY:Arboretum: The Sky Tonight...Featuring Hercules
DESCRIPTION:Join guest instructor Trevor Chandler inside his portable planetarium for this amazing program. Families are welcome and encouraged to attend! This planetarium series highlights the night sky as it is appears that evening. The presentations will change from month to month and season to season as our planet “goes through the motions”. We’ll look at what constellations and objects are visible at a given time of year\, but we’ll also spend some time getting to know a selected region of the sky in greater detail. At least one constellation will be selected each month\, highlighting its mythology and brighter stars including their names\, lore and meaning. Then we’ll take a look at a few of the astronomical objects located within the boundaries of the featured constellation. If weather conditions permit\, participants may be invited outside under the stars to see the real deal through a telescope. \nOur featured Constellation for July is Hercules\, the champion. Hercules is prominently positioned in the mid-summer sky. This region of the sky also happens to be the direction toward which our solar system is heading as makes its long circuit around the center of the Milky Way\, once every 250 million years or so. Although it is the fifth largest of the 88 constellations\, Hercules does not contain many bright stars. It does\, however\, abound with objects that are visible even with a small telescope. DESCRIPTION:Join Arboretum gardener Cael every other Friday at 12:15 p.m. for a tour of the Arboretum gardens. The tour will begin at the Hales McKay shelter (at the edge of the main Arboretum parking lot by the Arboretum Centre). Each tour will be different and could feature topics such as the exploration of the Gosling Wildlife Gardens\, the art of Japanese gardening\, elements to create a formal garden or the Arboretum Centre and its surroundings.
