SUMMARY:"Gaelic in Scotland\, Gaelic in Canada: Challenges\, Prospects\, Connections" Lecture by Professor Robert Dunbar
DESCRIPTION:Gaelic has been spoken for perhaps 1\,500 years or more in Scotland\, and for over 250 years in what is now Canada. Many Scots are not aware of how widely spoken Gaelic once was in Scotland\, and most Canadians are unaware of the fact that at the time of Confederation\, Gaelic was likely the third most widely-spoken language in Canada. It is now a highly vulnerable minority language in Scotland\, and is in an even more precarious position in Canada. Many factors help to explain the decline\, but neglect by\, and sometimes hostility of governments played an important part in the story. Over the last fifty years in Scotland\, and more recently in Canada—specifically\, in Nova Scotia—things have changed. In this presentation\, in addition to tracing the historical trajectory of the language in both Scotland and Canada\, Professor Robert Dunbar will explore efforts by individual activists\, communities and governments to support the language and its speakers in both countries. Prof. Dunbar will also explore the ongoing links between these two sea-divided language communities\, and what they can learn from each other\, and we can learn from them. \nAbout the Speaker\nRobert Dunbar is a Canadian and is Professor of Celtic at the University of Edinburgh. A graduate of the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School\, he practiced law in Toronto before doing an LL.M. in International Law at the London Schol of Economics and a PhD in Celtic at the University of Edinburgh\, where his thesis was on the Gaelic poet John MacLean (1787-1848)\, known in Scotland as ‘Bàrd Thighearna Cholla’ (The Bard to the Laird of Coll) and in Nova Scotia\, to which he emigrated in 1819\, as ‘Am Bàrd MacGilleain’ (The Bard MacLean). In addition to his work on Gaelic literature and culture\, particularly in the 19th century and in Canada\, he played an important role in the development of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005. He is a member of Bòrd na Gàidhlig and is also a member of the Committee of Experts\, a Council of Europe treaty body which oversees the implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages\, the only treaty in the world created to support languages such as Gaelic and their speakers. \nThe talk will be taking place at 3 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time)/8 p.m. (United Kingdom time) on Zoom. Registration is available on Eventbrite. The event is open to everyone including University of Guelph faculty and students and the public. \nThis talk is generously supported by the Scottish Government Office in Canada.

SUMMARY:Writing in the Sciences: Scientific Writing Style
DESCRIPTION:We will focus on specific strategies and techniques that writers can use to strengthen cohesion\, concision\, and clarity. We recommend that participants bring an example of their own scientific writing to the workshop (e.g.\, draft of a research article\, lab report\, critical review of a scientific research article). However\, instructors can provide an example text for participants. NOTE: your writing will not be shared with anyone; you will use it to practice techniques during the workshop.

SUMMARY:AGG Fall Season Launch 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. for the launch of the Art Gallery of Guelph’s fall exhibitions: Unsettling Conservation Collective: Reworldings\, curated by Alexandra Nordstrom\, as well as Soft Internet Theory\, curated by Tristan Sauer\, winner of the 2025 Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators. These are accompanied by two exhibitions curated from the Art Gallery of Guelph’s collections: Earth Dreams in Colour: Soft Explosions\, curated by Nordstrom\, and Glass\, Concrete\, and Stone\, curated by Sauer. \nRooted in Indigenous knowledge and collaborative practice\, Reworldings features Glenn Gear\, Melaw Nakehk’o\, Sheri Osden Nault\, Adrian Stimson\, and Michelle Wilson\, whose work reimagines how Land and Water are valued and protected\, foregrounding relationships of care\, respect\, responsibility\, and reciprocity often obscured by settler colonial conservation frameworks. \nIn Soft Internet Theory\, Devlin Macpherson\, Shihab Mian\, Laura Moore\, Marisa Müsing\, and Matt Nish-Lapidus use net art\, sculpture\, video\, and textile to explore technology with empathy\, envisioning a softer\, more human digital future rooted in connection\, pushing back against the isolation and automation central to dead internet theory. \nArtists and curators will be in attendance. All are welcome—refreshments will be served; cash bar. \nImage details (right to left): Adrian Stimson\, Lone Bull II – Kenow Wildfire Waterton Park (detail)\, 2025\, oil on birchwood\, 45.7 x 61 cm.
