SUMMARY:Creative Writing Series: Writing Poems that Spring from Poems
DESCRIPTION:The Surprising and Inevitable Art of the Glosa \nLearn from other poets and experiment with new uses of language by writing a glosa!  The glosa is a structured poetic tradition that involves borrowing lines from other texts. This art of “glossing”—elaborating or commenting on a text—allows writers to deepen their relationship to other poems\, consider the ways their writing is in conversation with other writers\, and build on other writers’ ideas.  Please bring four lines from a poem or song to this workshop to try out this form of poetry. \nThis in-person workshop will be delivered by visiting instructor\, Anna Lee-Popham. \nPlease note: \nRegistration for this event is limited.\nA light lunch will be provided. Registrants will be asked to submit their dietary requirements.\nEvent location is TBD.

SUMMARY:One Health Seminar with CERC Chair Dr. David McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:The title of Dr. McCarthy’s seminar is “Using a One Health Approach to Understanding and Mitigating Risks to Swimmers.“ \nDavid McCarthy leads a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS)\, the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) and the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC).  The team aims to understand how pathogens from human and animal waste move through urban water cycles\, how they interact with humans and how to reduce the health risks they pose. \nTo do this\, McCarthy’s lab is developing novel technologies to detect pathogens and their sources in near real-time\, designing a “lab-on-a-chip” device to enable pathogen detection in the field\, and modelling how humans interact with sources of contamination and reduce pathogen loads in the environment. McCarthy’s team emphasizes solutions that are easy to use\, low cost\, open source and open hardware\, to encourage and enable their use in all parts of the globe.
