SUMMARY:Political Science Speaker Series - Framed: Media and the Coverage of Race in Canadian Politics
DESCRIPTION:In a lecture on her award-winning book\, Erin Tolley (University of Toronto) argues that race influences electoral news coverage and politics in Canada.  Tolley shows that racial minority politicians receive more negative and less prominent media coverage than their white counterparts. She argues that this is a function of racialized assumptions\, institutional biases and organizational norms that undermine Canada’s commitment to inclusive democracy. \nMacKinnon Building\, Room 116

SUMMARY:2018 Winegard Visiting Lectureship on International Development
DESCRIPTION:Marie-Claude Bibeau\, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie will present the 2018 Winegard Visiting Lectureship on International Development Jan. 22. Minister Bibeau will present her lecture titled “The Future is Female: Canada’s first feminist international assistance policy.” \nRozanski Hall\, Room 101 \nIn her capacity as Minister of International Development and La Francophonie\, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau has a mandate to refocus Canada’s international assistance on helping the poorest and most vulnerable people and on supporting fragile states. In June 2017\, after several months of consultations\, Minister Bibeau launched Canada’s new Feminist International Assistance Policy. This innovative new vision will make Canada a leader in the fight against poverty by prioritizing gender equality in the country’s international assistance programming. \nSupported by this new policy\, Minister Bibeau advocates for actions and initiatives that empower women and girls\, and she defends their rights. As well\, she is at the heart of Canada’s strategy for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development objectives both at home and around the world. \nHelping Canada exercise its leadership on global health issues\, she played a key role in ensuring that Canada hosted the Fifth Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS\, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Montréal in September 2016\, and that it will host the Women Deliver conference in Vancouver in 2019\, which will bring together 6\,000 people. \nFinally\, faced with the conflicts shaking the planet\, Minister Bibeau intends to fight for the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers. In the House of Commons and elsewhere\, she ardently defends the importance of respecting humanitarian principles: humanism\, neutrality\, impartiality and independence.

SUMMARY:Town Hall Meeting to Discuss Proposed Fall Reading Break Changes
DESCRIPTION:The University of Guelph is considering extending its fall break. The current break includes one day following Thanksgiving weekend.  To accommodate additional fall study days\,  the University would need to adjust other key dates in the semester. \nThis matter has been discussed with student leaders\, faculty\, staff\, as well as at Senate.  There is currently no consensus regarding the best option for adjusting these key dates. A record of the deliberative discussion at Senate and additional comments received can be found on the University Secretariat website. \nUniversity Administration\, taking into consideration all of the responses received to date\, is recommending a proposal go forward through the governance process.  The proposal attempts to address comments heard from all members of our community. \nProposal: \nThat the schedule of dates be revised so the fall study break is extended by one additional day to include the Wednesday following Thanksgiving weekend\, and that classes start one day earlier (beginning the Wednesday after Labour Day weekend). \nThis updated proposal ensures that the end of the term remains as is and does not require exams on Sundays. \nThe main drawback of this proposal is the reduction of the orientation period by one day\, which could impact transition and retention success of first-year students. \nTown Hall Discussion – January 24 – 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. – Thornbrough Building\, Room 1307 \nA town hall meeting is being held to present this proposal\, to answer questions and to hear additional comments prior to the proposal being considered by the governing bodies. All students are welcome to attend this town hall meeting. \nThe proposal will be considered at a joint meeting of the Board of Undergraduate Studies and Board of Graduate Studies on January 25. It will then be considered by the Senate on February 5.
