SUMMARY:ArcGIS Pro 2 - More Analysis in GIS: Data Skills
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we’ll learn further GIS tools\, work with tables\, and begin working with raster data. Participants are expected to have strong familiarity with ArcGIS before registering in this workshop. \nArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude/longitude\, census locations\, name of a place…). ArcGIS is available on all the Library computers\, and also available for download to the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. \nPlease note: \nYou must use a University of Guelph login to self-register for this workshop. If you don’t have a U of G email address\, please contact library@uoguelph.ca to request registration for this workshop. When you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless you confirm otherwise with the instructor. This workshop allows limited attendees. If you are suddenly not able to attend\, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer your spot to someone on our waiting list. \nYou must have ArcGIS Pro installed on your computer prior to the workshop AND you must log into ArcGIS Online to create a U of G account in order to access ArcGIS Pro. You will not have time during the session to install the software or troubleshoot account issues. You must attend this workshop on a computer (not a mobile device). We cannot troubleshoot software or installations during the session. If you are unable to install the software please contact the presenter so we can give your seat to someone on the waiting list. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging conversation with pioneering video artist Susan Mogul\, who will discuss her 1997 video I Stare at You and Dream\, featured in AGG’s exhibition Do You Remember Love\, as well as her wider practice. Known for intertwining autobiography with documentary strategies\, Mogul’s work often explores themes of family\, relationships\, and identity through a deeply personal lens. \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend. The narrative is intimate\, intertwining familial and romantic relationships to explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of women’s identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nSusan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s\, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives\, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally\, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024\, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum\, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. \nMogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020)\, where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. Her career and contributions are further explored in Women of Vision: Histories in Feminist Film and Video\, where a chapter is devoted to her impactful legacy. \nThis program is co-presented with Ed Video Media Arts Centre with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council\, an agency of the Government of Ontario.

DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Ed Video\, the Art Gallery of Guelph invites you to an engaging evening featuring a screening of Susan Mogul’s 1997 film\, I Stare at You and Dream\, currently showcased alongside a collection of over 80 quillboxes in the exhibition Do You Remember Love. The film highlights the intersecting lives of four individuals\, following the intertwining familial and romantic relationships that explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nEvent Highlights\nCandid Corner Pop-Up: At 6:30 p.m.\, participate in Ed Video’s interactive video recording station where you can share your thoughts and reflections on relationships\, relationality\, and family\, themes inspired by the film. \nFilm Screening: Stay at 7:30 p.m. to watch Mogul’s intimate exploration of the lives of four individuals over six months. \nBefore the screening\, program facilitators will prompt participants with thought-provoking questions about relationships\, interpersonal connections\, and family ties. Step up to the mic in the Candid Corner booth and contribute your voice to a live\, collaborative video project. Your reflections will be edited in real-time into a short film\, which will be presented at the end of the evening as a collective community response to I Stare at You and Dream. \nParticipation in the Candid Corner program is optional\, and all are welcome. \nPlease note: \nThis event is recommended for adults. DESCRIPTION:This is a two-part course that will introduce you to the wonders of growing all kinds of different plants from seed and will draw on Robert Pavlis’ experience growing over 2\,000 species of plants from seed. \nPart 1: Fundamentals of Seed Germination\nThis first part will look at the basics of seed biology to really understand the development of a plant from seed. This knowledge will then be expanded to discuss important topics such as collecting your own seed and storing seed for future growth. We’ll have an in-depth look at seed dormancy and different ways of overcoming it. \nWe’ll then look at some specific examples like germinating petunias\, peonies\, jack-in-the-pulpits\, and maple trees. These will provide insight into different types of seed germination processes. \nPart 2: Practical Aspects of Seed Germination\nDescription: Now that you understand the fundamental basics it is time to look at the practical aspects of growing from seed. We’ll look at different techniques such as growing in pots\, the baggy method and winter sowing. We’ll examine ways of dealing with very small and very large seed\, and I’ll show you techniques for scarification and stratification\, as well as some tricks for overcoming seed dormancy. \nWe’ll also look at essentials such as lighting\, temperature\, watering and hardening off seedlings. \nAt the end of this two-part course you will be able to germinate thousands of different seeds including both outdoor and indoor plants. \nFee: $20 (plus HST) per person.

DESCRIPTION:While sitting on the dock\, have you ever asked “Did that loon just attack that duck?” or “How can that Pileated Woodpecker peck such big holes without hurting its brain?” or “Which hawk is that flying overhead?” The answers to these and many other bird-related questions will be covered in this series of eight one-hour sessions on the birds you notice while visiting a cottage\, hiking in a northern park or tenting at your favourite campsite. We will cover identification clues\, behavior\, nesting info\, habitat\, foraging techniques and more. Cottage projects and activities that help birds will also be a part of each session as well as a 10-15 minute discussion period for bird-related questions. All eight programs cost of $70 (plus tax) – that’s less than $10 per program! \nMondays and Wednesdays\, January 20\, 22\, 27\, 29\, February 3\, 5\, 10\, and 12\, 2025\, noon to 1 p.m. \nFee: $70.00 + H.S.T. This event will take place on Zoom. The list of topics with the presentation date is listed below. DESCRIPTION:The Landscape Architecture program in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development presents a guest lecture with Elena Tudela and Victor Rico\, two of the co-founders of ORU – the Oficina de Resiliencia Urbana (Office of Urban Resilience) in Mexico City. This organization brings together more than ten years of experience in the academic\, public\, and private sectors and multilateral organizations. \nORU is a women and minority-led urban and landscape design office\, with the main focus of building resilience to climate change. They utilize the transformative power of urban design and landscape infrastructure to shape new futures of interconnected urban regions\, strengthened ecological structures\, environmentally integrated cities\, and resilient communities. All are welcome to attend the online lecture.

SUMMARY:Re-stitching as Methodology: Garment-making as a Transformative Practice in Research-creation with Justine Woods
DESCRIPTION:In this combined presentation and workshop\, Justine Woods will discuss garment-making as research-creation with particular focus on the role garments play in resisting settler colonial displacement of Indigenous ontologies and bodies to place. Informed by her PhD dissertation research\, Justine will expand upon the concept of ‘re-stitching’ as both a theoretical framework and embodied practice in exploring how the act of garment-making done by the Indigenous body can regenerate Indigenous ontology and re-stitch new worlds and futurities. \nTo support the workshop component of the talk\, attendees are encouraged to bring an article of clothing that they do not mind making permanent changes and or adjustments to. \nMore About the Presenter: \nJustine Woods (she/her) is a garment artist\, creative scholar\, and educator with a focus in Indigenous fashion and material culture\, Indigenous arts-based methodologies\, performance and embodiment\, and research-creation. She is a Doctoral Candidate in the Media and Design Innovation practice-based PhD program at Toronto Metropolitan University. Justine is a registered citizen of the Métis Nation of Ontario whose familial ties span the Red River\, Northern Michigan\, and Southern Georgian Bay in Ontario. Her Métis family names are Vasseur\, St. Onge\, Lafrenière\, and Berger-Beaudoin.
