SUMMARY:Thinking Spaces: Phil Mullen\, “Ways Into Improvisation”
DESCRIPTION:In this participatory workshop\, Dr Mullen will look at three approaches to group improvising—1) improvising with pulse and rhythm\, 2) using stimuli such as text\, visuals and thematic starting points\, and 3) the Search and Reflect methodology as pioneered by Phil’s mentor John Stevens\, a key figure in European Free Group Improvisation. Please bring an instrument if possible. \nPhil Mullen has worked for forty years developing music with people who are socially excluded. He specializes in working with excluded children and young people at risk. He has run workshops\, seminars and training in 28 countries across Europe\, North and South America\, Australia and Asia. \nPhil has a PHD from Winchester University and has written a number of book chapters on musical inclusion including for the Oxford Handbook of Community Music (2018). Phil’s book “Challenging Voices: Music making with young people excluded from school” is published by Peter Lang. \n

Join Chris Earley\, Arboretum Interpretive Biologist and author of 5 bird field guides\, for a series of eight virtual noon-hour lectures on eight different bird groups. ID techniques\, field marks\, shapes\, behaviour clues and more will all be covered. \nEach course will finish with a 10 – 15 minute discussion period so you can ask all your bird-related questions. All eight programs cost $70 (plus tax) – that’s less than $10 per program! Bird groups covered include: Hawks\, Ducks\, Sparrows\, Sandpipers\, Gulls\, Spring Warblers\, Fall Warblers and Spring Migrants (presentation dates listed below). Recordings of each will be sent to all participants the next day. DESCRIPTION:The first mandate of Dr. Carabin’s Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology and One Health is to highlight the importance of the One Health approach during crises and create an understanding of the epidemiological challenges encountered in identifying the underlying causes of population health status or health behaviours. \nThe second mandate is to incorporate advanced epidemiological methods to investigate complex One Health issues in Canada (Axis 1) and in low-income countries (Axis 2). \nDuring this presentation\, some of the challenges encountered during the first mandate and the solutions that will be incorporated into the second mandate of the CRC will be discussed.

Join Chris Earley\, Arboretum Interpretive Biologist and author of 5 bird field guides\, for a series of eight virtual noon-hour lectures on eight different bird groups. ID techniques\, field marks\, shapes\, behaviour clues and more will all be covered. \nEach course will finish with a 10 – 15 minute discussion period so you can ask all your bird-related questions. All eight programs cost $70 (plus tax) – that’s less than $10 per program! Bird groups covered include: Hawks\, Ducks\, Sparrows\, Sandpipers\, Gulls\, Spring Warblers\, Fall Warblers and Spring Migrants (presentation dates listed below). DESCRIPTION:The Theatre Studies Department at the University of Guelph presents “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.” The production is quickly approaching on November 21\, 22\, and 23 at 7 p.m. and will be held in the Arts Research Centre (ARC) Theatre in the MacKinnon Building at the University of Guelph. \n“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” by Jay Presson Allen\, based on and adapted from the novel by Muriel Spark\, is a timely exploration of a brilliant and charismatic teacher who has full control over her students\, her “crème de la crème.” She pushes them into “heroic action\,” which\, as it turns out\, has dire consequences for some. Set in 1930s Scotland against a backdrop of rising political tensions\, this relevant work prompts the audience to consider issues of trust and leadership. \nThis production is directed by School of Theatre\, English\, and Creative Writing faculty member and renowned Canadian playwright Professor Judith Thompson. \nPerformance and production work is by third and fourth year Theatre Studies students. The production also features Stephanie Jones\, a Theatre Studies PhD student in the title role of Jean Brodie. Stephanie brings many years of professional experience to the role. Professor Thompson is assisted by PhD student Erin O’Brien. \nWe hope you can join us for one of the three evening performances. \nThe ARC Theatre is an 80 seat performance space with flat access and proximity to an accessible washroom. The majority of the seating is tiered with limited floor-level seats. \nThis performance contains bright lights\, lighting shifts\, and some sudden noises. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, Priya will introduce her approach to music psychotherapy in the context of adult mental health\, inviting attendees to participate in exploring the role that clinical improvisation can play in accessing and processing emotions\, building social connection\, and developing personal insights and growth. \nPriya Zalis (RP\, MTA\, MMT) is a music therapist\, psychotherapist\, and educator working in adult inpatient mental health and addictions in Guelph\, Ontario\, Canada. She holds a Master’s in Music Therapy (Wilfrid Laurier University) and a Diploma in Gestalt Psychotherapy (Gestalt Institute of Toronto)\, and has prior experience in hospice\, oncology\, long-term care\, and community mental health settings. Current research explores the impacts of group music therapy in trauma processing and issues related to diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and belonging in Canadian music therapy. She loves spending time with her family and getting lost in a good book.

DESCRIPTION:In honouring five generations of listening\, watching and learning\, Ojibway/Potawatomi artist Boshdayosgaykwe Pawis grew up in and around the gift of traditional quillwork\, living and learning to continually work toward teaching this skill. \nAs the founder of G’zaagin Art Gallery\, she resourcefully uses only natural materials and finds creative ways for people to experience natural products. Participants will learn about quillwork and use materials that have been harvested\, cleaned\, dried\, and stored by G’zaagin Art Gallery throughout the year to make their own quillwork medallion. Come learn and listen to Pawis’ stories\, filled with love and gratitude\, as we learn to listen to our Earth Mother. \nThis workshop is best suited to participants aged 16 and older. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences in the College of Biological Science is pleased to host Dr. Billie-Jo Hardy from the University of Toronto and Dr. Amy Bombay from Carleton University. They will be speaking about their experiences developing a biological health research training program with First Nations health professionals and researchers. \nBoth researchers will present virtually\, but there will be an in-person viewing option\, with refreshments available. \nDr. Amy Bombay is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Carleton University. Amy is Anishnaabe (Rainy River First Nations) and her primary areas of research have focused on assessing the associations between multigenerational trauma\, contemporary stressor exposure\, and cultural identity and engagement in predicting health and wellness among Indigenous Peoples. Her research exploring the different pathways by which Indian Residential School experiences are transmitted across generations has garnered extensive media interest and has influenced policy and practice related to Indigenous health and well-being. \nDr. Billie-Jo Hardy is an Assistant Professor with Social and Behavioural Health Sciences and Associate Director at Waakebiness Institute for Indigenous Health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health\, University of Toronto. She is also an Affiliate Scientist at the Well Living House at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at Unity Health Toronto. Her interests are in public health\, research ethics\, health equity and community-partnered research and she has experience in global and Indigenous health research. \nThe College of Biological Science Community Seminar Series is designed to promote the work and visibility of biologists from equity-deserving groups\, increase awareness of barriers to inclusion facing biologists\, and provide opportunities to learn about equity\, diversity and inclusion. DESCRIPTION:Why not take your birding to the next level? Join Chris Earley\, Arboretum Interpretive Biologist and author of 5 bird field guides\, for a series of eight virtual noon-hour lectures on eight different bird groups. ID techniques\, field marks\, shapes\, behaviour clues and more will all be covered. \nEach course will finish with a 10 – 15 minute discussion period so you can ask all your bird-related questions. All eight programs cost $70 (plus tax) – that’s less than $10 per program! Bird groups covered include: Hawks\, Ducks\, Sparrows\, Sandpipers\, Gulls\, Spring Warblers\, Fall Warblers and Spring Migrants (presentation dates listed below). Recordings of each will be sent to all participants the next day. The recordings will be available for one month after the last program. \nMondays and Wednesdays\, November 4\, 6\, 11\, 13\, 18\, 20\, 25\, and 27\, 2024\nNoon to 1 p.m.
