DESCRIPTION:Calling makers of all ages and stages! Join us at the Art Gallery of Guelph for an afternoon of creative activity using the simplest of materials: paper\, glue\, and scissors. \nProjects are inspired by the artwork currently on view by artist Justin Favela who uses everyday materials to ingeniously to “make something out of nothing\,” as he describes it\, producing his distinctive mash-ups of traditional and popular culture. Drop in between 1 to 5 p.m. for as long as you like to make creative curios and magnificent masterpieces to take home\, and contribute to collective community cut paper banners (papel picado) and murals that will be displayed at the gallery. Learn more about traditional and contemporary paper art practices from Latin America during Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month\, an opportunity to recognize the cultures and contributions of these communities that have indelibly enriched our collective experiences. \nThe AGG Make-a-thon is ideal for everyone\, from beginners and families to established artists. All materials are provided; no experience necessary. Participants 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult for supervision and support. Bring your curiosity and explore your creative inspiration! \nThis program is organized and presented by the Art Gallery of Guelph with the support of the Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Intro to GIS using ArcGIS Pro: Data Skills
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will learn how to navigate ArcPro\, kinds of GIS data\, how to add data to a map\, basic symbology\, and labelling\, how to filter data\, and how to create a finished map. \nArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. ArcGIS Pro is the desktop mapping software of ArcGIS. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude / longitude\, census locations\, name of a place\, etc.). ArcPro is available for download for the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. \nPlease note: \nYou must use a University of Guelph login to self-register for this workshop. If you don’t have a U of G email address\, please contact library@uoguelph.ca to request registration for this workshop. When you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless you confirm otherwise with the instructor. This workshop allows limited attendees. If you are suddenly not able to attend\, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer your spot to someone on our waiting list. \nYou must have ArcGIS Pro installed on your computer prior to the workshop AND you must log into ArcGIS Online to create a U of G account to access ArcGIS Pro. You will not have time during the session to install the software or troubleshoot account issues. You must attend this workshop on a computer (not a mobile device). We welcome Dr. Mariam Thalos\, visiting as the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Digital Humanities\, to the University of Guelph. All are welcome! Refreshments will be provided. \nAbstract: The concept of intelligence is difficult to get one’s arms around. Does it consist in the capacity for strategy? Thought? Planning? Reasoning? Surprisingly\, there is no standout philosophical account even of the notion of reasoning. This talk aims at shedding some light on certain aspects of human reasoning – reasoning for practical life. This will put us in a better position to make some comparisons between (some aspects of) human reasoning and what Large Language Models (LLMs) are doing – they look to be doing quite different things. \nBio: Dr. Mariam Thalos is the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Digital Humanities at the University of Guelph. A Distinguished Professor at the University of Tennessee since 2018\, she is a philosopher of science with a broad spectrum of interests in the physical\, decisional\, and human sciences. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we’ll learn further GIS tools\, work with tables\, and begin working with raster data. Participants are expected to have strong familiarity with ArcGIS before registering in this workshop. \nArcGIS is a Geographic Information System (GIS); a software program for working with maps and geographic data. A GIS allows you to work with any data that you know a location for (eg. addresses\, latitude/longitude\, census locations\, name of a place…). ArcGIS is available on all the Library computers\, and also available for download to the University community. Although similar in some ways to online mapping sites\, ArcGIS has greater analytical capabilities and allows you more input and control over your map. \nPlease note: \nYou must use a University of Guelph login to self-register for this workshop. If you don’t have a U of G email address\, please contact library@uoguelph.ca to request registration for this workshop. When you register for this workshop you are committing to attend the entire workshop unless you confirm otherwise with the instructor. This workshop allows limited attendees. If you are suddenly not able to attend\, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer your spot to someone on our waiting list. \nYou must have ArcGIS Pro installed on your computer prior to the workshop AND you must log into ArcGIS Online to create a U of G account in order to access ArcGIS Pro. The scenarios include: \n\nWriting emails to professors and/or advisors\nProviding written feedback to students as TAs\nAvoiding plagiarism\nWriting abstracts for academic audiences\nWriting cover letters to potential employers\n\nThis program is divided into five workshops that run over three weeks. Each workshop is two hours in length. SUMMARY:Documentary: Butterflies on the Brink: The Story of the Mottled Duskywing
DESCRIPTION:A University of Guelph project to reintroduce an endangered butterfly is the feature of a new documentary\, Butterflies on the Brink: The Story of the Mottled Duskywing\, which will have its first public premiere at the Princess Twin Cinemas in Waterloo in October. \nThe documentary follows the research and recovery team\, led Dr. Ryan Norris from the Department of Integrative Biology and biologist Jessica Linton\, with support from the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory team\, as they work to reintroduce the mottled duskywing butterfly to Pinery Provincial Park. The project represents the first time a butterfly has ever been successfully reintroduced into Ontario\, and\, since their reintroduction in 2021\, the butterflies are showing signs of recovery. \nOnce widespread across many parts of central Canada\, mottled duskywings have nearly disappeared from Ontario. Like many other species\, the butterfly’s number have plummeted in recent decades due to human development that has stolen their habitat. In 2012\, the butterflies were declared endangered in Canada. \nThe cast and crew will be in attendance at both the Oct. 19 and 23 screenings!

DESCRIPTION:What are English Language Workshops: Everyday Writing?\nThis five-part program provides support in academic written communication for graduate-level students who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL). This program provides students an opportunity to improve their writing in typical academic and professional scenarios. The scenarios include: \n\nWriting emails to professors and/or advisors\nProviding written feedback to students as TAs\nAvoiding plagiarism\nWriting abstracts for academic audiences\nWriting cover letters to potential employers\n\nThis program is divided into five workshops that run over three weeks. Each workshop is two hours in length. This program is offered only in the Fall semester. \nAre these workshops for you?\n\nAre you a graduate student\, postdoctoral fellow\, or visiting scholar who speaks English as an Additional Language?\nWould you like to develop your confidence and skills in academic writing\nWould you like a safe place to practice and develop writing strategies for a variety of academic contexts?\n\nIf you answered yes to these questions\, then this program is for you! \nWhat can you expect as a participant?\n\nParticipants will engage in discussions around the challenges and strategies for successfully writing emails to advisors and professors; feedback to students (as TAs); paraphrases; abstracts; and cover letters.\nParticipants will engage in practice activities that will allow them to learn and practice written communication skills and strategies as they apply to these academic and professional scenarios.\nStudents will brainstorm and develop language and vocabulary that can be used in these writing tasks.\n\nWho can attend?\nThis program accepts registrations from U of G graduate students\, postdoctoral fellows\, or visiting scholars who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL).
