SUMMARY:2024 Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium: “Sheets of Sound: Jazz\, Improvisation\, and Liner Notes”
DESCRIPTION:Please join us from Wednesday\, September 11 to Saturday\, September 13 for the “2024 Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium\, Sheets of Sound: Jazz\, Improvisation\, and Liner Notes.” \nThis colloquium will take place in person at ImprovLab (Room 108) in the MacKinnon Building. The event is free and open to everybody. \nSince 1996\, the Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium\, co-presented by the University of Guelph in partnership with the Guelph Jazz Festival\, has brought together diverse communities of interest by providing a scholarly forum for dialogue among researchers\, creative practitioners\, arts presenters\, and members of the general public. \nThe focus of this year’s colloquium is “Liner Notes.” \nIn what ways have liner notes shaped the way the music is received? To what extent do liner notes contribute to the ways in which we negotiate and construct meaning about the music\, how we understand history\, how and why we listen? In what ways have digital dissemination and streaming services disrupted our notions of liner notes? And how has this shifted listener/audience understanding about their favourite artists? \nFeaturing keynotes by Daphne Brooks (Department of African American Studies\, Yale University) and Ashley Kahn (NYU Tisch School of the Arts)\, this year’s edition of The Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium showcases panels\, workshops\, and artistic presentations that creatively respond to these tasks\, and that take up the question of what it means to use the liner note genre to write about jazz and creative improvised music.

SUMMARY:Critical Relationalism by Design
DESCRIPTION:Métis professor and architect Dr. David Fortin will discuss an emerging positionality in design away from human-centred thinking and instead towards the enhancement of all life. Framed as an evolution from earlier emphases in architecture focused on Critical Regionalism\, or the emphasis on design informed by geography\, Critical Relationalism instead asks what relationality means in design and how this can guide intentions when approaching the design process. \nDavid Fortin is a Professor at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture and a registered architect in the provinces of Ontario\, Saskatchewan\, British Columbia\, and Alberta. He completed his doctoral studies at the University of Edinburgh in 2009 and has since taught undergraduate and graduate courses in architectural design\, history and theory\, in the UK\, USA\, and Canada. David was the inaugural Associate Director of the Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute and the Director of the McEwen School of Architecture at Laurentian University from 2018-2021. Raised in Alberta and Saskatchewan\, he is now a citizen of the Métis Nation of Ontario and member of the RAIC Indigenous Task Force. He has twice been selected with colleagues to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale (2018\, 2023) and in 2024 was named an Emerging Voice by the Architectural League of New York. His research and practice focus on questions surrounding speculative futures\, Métis architecture and design\, and the relationship between design and reconciliation. As an architect and consultant\, he has worked with Indigenous communities across the lands now known as Canada\, prioritizing their values and voices throughout the various initiatives.

DESCRIPTION:We will focus on specific strategies and techniques that writers can use to strengthen cohesion\, concision\, and clarity. We recommend that participants bring an example of their own scientific writing to the workshop (e.g.\, draft of a research article\, lab report\, critical review of a scientific research article). However\, instructors can provide an example text for participants. \nNOTE: Your writing will not be shared with anyone; you will use it to practice techniques during the workshop.
