DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Scottish Studies is pleased to share the annual Scotland-Canada Academic Partnership (S-CAP) Lecture! \nJoin us virtually on Tuesday\, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time)/6 p.m. (United Kingdom time) on Zoom for Nova Scotia and the Imperial Strategies of Highland Scots\, delivered by Professor Karly Kehoe\, Saint Mary’s University. \nAbout the Talk\nThis talk explores the legacy of colonial privilege by looking at patterns of Scottish Highland settlement in Nova Scotia. Catholic Highlanders made use of the spectrum of advantages inherent in the White European settler experience despite facing significant persecution at home. Examining their connections with the process of empire building builds a deeper understanding of the complexities of colonization and helps us to think about Scottish History’s connection with Canada’s reconciliation process. \nAbout the Speaker\nKarly Kehoe is Professor of History at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. Her work focuses on Scottish Highland migration\, colonial privilege and settler colonialism in the north Atlantic world. She is the author of numerous works related to Scottish History\, including the award-winning book Empire and Emancipation: Scottish and Irish Catholics at the Atlantic Fringe. She is the past convenor of the Scottish Historical Review Trust and co-editor of the Histories of the Scottish Atlantic book series with Edinburgh University Press. \nThis talk is generously supported by the Scottish Government Office in Canada. \nRegister on Eventbrite.

DESCRIPTION:Although many people think that procrastination is a time management issue\, most often it is an emotional response. \nWe’ll tackle the “complicated failure of self-regulation” in the anxiety-procrastination cycle by learning tips\, reviewing research insights\, and practicing practical strategies to intervene when anxiety and procrastination are feeding each other. While we can guarantee an atmospheric nighttime stroll through the forest\, our main goal will be to try to encounter a wild owl ourselves. Owls frequent The Arboretum regularly\, and this walk is a wonderful opportunity to learn what to listen and look for\, which are skills you can employ to search for owls in your own neighbourhood! \nThe Adults only program is for adults and teens aged 14+. DESCRIPTION:Want to take a deeper dive into the owls of Ontario? This workshop builds on our classic Owl Prowl programming and offers an extended\, more immersive experience. Participants will explore the detailed ecology of Ontario’s owls\, including how to identify species by sight and sound\, understand their behaviour and habitat needs\, and learn practical tips on the whooooo\, what\, where\, when\, and how of looking for them. \nThe program includes a variety of hands-on activities such as dissecting owl pellets\, searching for owls during the daytime\, and heading out again after dark for a guided night-time owling session. The workshop takes place both indoors and outdoors\, for an experience that combines classroom learning with field-based exploration to give participants a well-rounded\, in-depth understanding and appreciation of these remarkable birds. *Maximum 20 people. \nFee: $105 (plus HST) per person if you register by the early bird deadline of Jan. 15\, 2025. SUMMARY:Virtual Winter Tree I.D.
DESCRIPTION:No leaves? No problem! In this workshop\, offered in a convenient Zoom setting\, you will learn about the variety of tree features that are useful for identifying trees in winter. From buds and twigs to leaf scars and bark\, we will take an in-depth look at the surprisingly distinctive characteristics that let us unlock the identities of trees in their dormant season. We will focus on native Ontario tree species. Optional ‘homework’ assignments will encourage you to get outside and observe trees in between sessions. The program runs once a week for 4 weeks. Sessions are recorded and made available to registrants for a limited time\, so you can take part even if you are not available for the live Zoom sessions. \nFee: $50 (plus HST) per person for the 4 session program. \n* Please note that we are also going to be offering an all-day\, in-person Winter Tree ID workshop on Saturday\, Feb. 21\, 2026 (ie. you book one day or the other not both). The virtual and in-person programs are stand-alone\, independent programs\, but if you are very keen you may enjoy taking both!
