SUMMARY:"Gaelic in Scotland\, Gaelic in Canada: Challenges\, Prospects\, Connections" Lecture by Professor Robert Dunbar
DESCRIPTION:Gaelic has been spoken for perhaps 1\,500 years or more in Scotland\, and for over 250 years in what is now Canada. Many Scots are not aware of how widely spoken Gaelic once was in Scotland\, and most Canadians are unaware of the fact that at the time of Confederation\, Gaelic was likely the third most widely-spoken language in Canada. It is now a highly vulnerable minority language in Scotland\, and is in an even more precarious position in Canada. Many factors help to explain the decline\, but neglect by\, and sometimes hostility of governments played an important part in the story. Over the last fifty years in Scotland\, and more recently in Canada—specifically\, in Nova Scotia—things have changed. In this presentation\, in addition to tracing the historical trajectory of the language in both Scotland and Canada\, Professor Robert Dunbar will explore efforts by individual activists\, communities and governments to support the language and its speakers in both countries. Prof. Dunbar will also explore the ongoing links between these two sea-divided language communities\, and what they can learn from each other\, and we can learn from them. \nAbout the Speaker\nRobert Dunbar is a Canadian and is Professor of Celtic at the University of Edinburgh. A graduate of the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School\, he practiced law in Toronto before doing an LL.M. in International Law at the London Schol of Economics and a PhD in Celtic at the University of Edinburgh\, where his thesis was on the Gaelic poet John MacLean (1787-1848)\, known in Scotland as ‘Bàrd Thighearna Cholla’ (The Bard to the Laird of Coll) and in Nova Scotia\, to which he emigrated in 1819\, as ‘Am Bàrd MacGilleain’ (The Bard MacLean). In addition to his work on Gaelic literature and culture\, particularly in the 19th century and in Canada\, he played an important role in the development of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005. He is a member of Bòrd na Gàidhlig and is also a member of the Committee of Experts\, a Council of Europe treaty body which oversees the implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages\, the only treaty in the world created to support languages such as Gaelic and their speakers. \nThe talk will be taking place at 3 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time)/8 p.m. (United Kingdom time) on Zoom. Registration is available on Eventbrite. The event is open to everyone including University of Guelph faculty and students and the public. \nThis talk is generously supported by the Scottish Government Office in Canada.

SUMMARY:Galls of Southern Ontario Workshop (In-person)
DESCRIPTION:What is a gall? If you’ve ever noticed a strange bump\, ball\, or swelling on a leaf or stem\, you’ve likely spotted one—but what caused it? Galls are abnormal plant growths triggered by a diverse range of organisms\, including insects\, mites\, and fungi. Far from being mere deformities\, these structures serve as protective homes and food sources for the creatures that create them. They come in an astonishing variety of shapes\, sizes\, and colors—each with its own unique natural history. \nJoin us for a workshop on the Galls of Southern Ontario\, where we’ll explore their incredible diversity\, how they form\, the organisms behind them\, and so much more. This hybrid workshop will begin indoors with an introduction to gall biology\, followed by an outdoor exploration in The Arboretum\, where we’ll search for galls in the field. With well over 100 types of galls found here\, there’s an incredible amount to discover!. \n*Maximum 18 adults. \nFee: $94 (plus HST) per person if you register by the early bird deadline of August 19\, 2025. After August 19 the fee is $104 plus HST.

SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping: Slow Walk to Nowhere Part II The Green Path with Dawn Matheson
DESCRIPTION:Open to all ages and abilities\, including those using assistive devices. Dress for the weather and come ready to wander! \nJoin us for the second in a two-part series of experimental walking programs led by artist Dawn Matheson\, presented in the context of the exhibition 155\,578. Slow Walk to Nowhere Part II: The Green Path invites participants to engage in a walk guided not by intention or destination\, but by the world around them. Set in the University of Guelph Arboretum\, each walker will follow only external cues—a bird call\, a shifting breeze\, the direction of a falling leaf\, a scent on the wind\, or the orientation of a branch. These subtle signs become wayfinders in a slow drift shaped by the natural world. \nNote that The Arboretum has two porta potties available in the evening\, located at the east end of the closed washrooms. One is wheelchair accessible. \nStarting point: Hales-MacKay Shelter\, by the parking lot off the College St. Arboretum entrance
