SUMMARY:Constellations\, Milky Way and Telescopes
DESCRIPTION:This in-person hour-long session will have a little bit for everyone. \nFirst\, we’ll learn a few of the prominent winter constellations and how to find them (maps provided). Then we will look at photographs of several fascinating objects inside these constellations\, with photographs taken by talented local astrophotographers. We’ll cap off the evening by observing a few of these objects with telescopes. In the event of cloudy weather\, the telescopes will be set up inside to allow participants to look at a nearby target and compare the different views. \nFee: $12 (plus HST) per person.

DESCRIPTION:Cross-Border Dialogues is a series of conversations between arts programmers based in Canada and the United States. Participants will address a range of topics including the philosophies that inform their work\, their methods for engagement\, and the role of pedagogy and community outreach in their respective practices. \nThis iteration features Ryan Rice and heather ahtone. \nRyan Rice\, Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawake\, is a curator\, critic and creative consultant based in Toronto. His institutional and independent curatorial career spans 30 years in community\, museums\, artist run centres\, public spaces and galleries. Rice focuses his extensive curatorial research and writing on contemporary and Onkwehón:we art. In 2023\, he co-curated the 2023 Bonavista Biennale (Newfoundland) and he was appointed to OCAD University’s Onsite Gallery as the Executive Director alongside his Curator\, Indigenous Art post. He consistently contributes to multiple communities to advance leadership and organizational experiences in the arts and culture sector. \nDr. heather ahtone (Choctaw/Chickasaw Nation) is Director of Curatorial Affairs at First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City\, Oklahoma. Her research examines the intersection between Indigenous cultural knowledge\, art and museum practice. Working in the Native arts community since 1993\, she has curated numerous exhibits\, publishes regularly\, and continues to seek opportunities to broaden discourse on global contemporary Indigenous arts. In addition to serving the Native arts community\, she is on the editorial board for American Art Journal\, is on multiple boards\, including the Clara Luper Civil Rights Center\, Association of Art Museum Curators\, and the Native American Art Studies Association. \nPresented with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and Guelph Community Foundation Community Fund.

Zahra is an award-winning DJ\, producer\, radio host\, and multi-faceted creator. Her Lunar Rotations radio show and live experience is a performance of cathartic\, creative force\, and has rocked dance floors in London\, Toronto\, and New York. She has produced countless radio and podcast programs\, and is known for her ability to inspire deep understanding and transformative ideas in her interviews\, viewable on LunarRotations.TV. Throughout the year\, this group organizes public talks\, workshops\, special events\, and concerts\, as well as reading sessions that may include music\, performance\, film\, academic texts\, fiction\, etc.\, based around critical thinking on improvisation. Readings are circulated in advance\, and may also include short informal presentations by current IICSI students\, artists or community groups.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: Anong Beam and Rhéanne Chartrand
DESCRIPTION:In response to the Art Gallery of Guelph’s Fall 2023 exhibition Carl Beam: Pieces of a Puzzle\, AGG welcomes artist Anong Beam\, Carl Beam’s daughter\, in conversation with curator Rhéanne Chartrand\, who has long been engaged with Beam’s oeuvre. Considering the stories and legacies of the Manitoulin Island-based M’Chigeeng artist\, their dialogue will centre on The Columbus Suite\, a compelling series of prints featured in the exhibition created by Beam in response to the discourses surrounding the quincentenary of European arrival on Turtle Island. \nProbing the nuances with which the artist investigated and challenged narratives of world history\, politics\, science\, ecology\, materiality\, and Indigeneity\, the speakers will delve into Beam’s profound influence and its resonance on both personal and community levels.
