SUMMARY:The Winegard Visiting Lectureship in Physics with Dr. Donna Strickland
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Winegard Visiting Lectureship in Physics with Dr. Donna Strickland\, Professor and Nobel Prize laureate\, for a lecture on nonlinear optics to high-intensity laser physics. \nThe laser increased the intensity of light that can be generated by orders of magnitude and thus brought about nonlinear optical interactions with matter. Chirped pulse amplification\, also known as CPA\, changed the intensity level by a few more orders of magnitude and helped usher in a new type of laser-matter interaction that is referred to as high-intensity laser physics. \nDr. Donna Strickland is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo and is one of the laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for developing chirped pulse amplification with Gérard Mourour. \nRegistration required by March 9. \nLearn more at https://alumni.uoguelph.ca/events/events-listing/2023-winegard-lecture-with-dr-donna-strickland.

SUMMARY:Tynecastle Park\, Edinburgh - The future of football architecture?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating talk on historical and recent events in Scottish football architecture. \nFocusing on Edinburgh’s Tynecastle Park\, the key issue is the survival of historical inner-city sports arenas and the quest to make football architecture more sustainable. His main fields of teaching are architectural history and architectural preservation. He directs the school’s executive master’s programme in architectural heritage and is currently the head of the Oslo Centre for Critical Architectural Studies. SUMMARY:Arboretum Workshop: Virtual Composting for Gardeners - Composting Piles\, Bins and Drums
DESCRIPTION:The previous workshop provided information about the composting process. This workshop is more hands on and looks at various methods for completing both hot and cold composting. Hot composting is the traditional method using one or more bins. This is a great system that makes faster compost\, but it is impractical for smaller gardens. Various plastic bins and drums are more suitable there. We’ll have a look at various commercial and DIY systems. \nAt the end of this course you will be able to select the right composting system that meets your requirements and you will know how to start the process\, care for it\, and what to do with the finished compost. \nIf you are going to take this course it is a good idea to also take Introduction to Composting for Gardeners. \nFee: $10 (plus HST) per person.
