After all\, the food found in Canada is as diverse as the people who live here. \nA brand new documentary short film\, A Nation’s Table\, explores the life’s work of Anita Stewart\, the “patron saint of Canadian food”. Thanks to her boundless tenacity and enthusiasm\, she contributed more than ever imaginable to uncovering untold stories that celebrate Canadian cuisine\, ultimately leading to the nationally recognized “Food Day In Canada.” Through her life of activism on food and the people who bring it to us\, she turned crisis into opportunity\, setting the table for Canada to build its culinary traditions into an evolving food system that’s the envy of the world. \nJoin us for a premiere screening of A Nation’s Table documentary celebrating the legacy of Anita Stewart. Your ticket will include a film screening\, a panel discussion\, and a post-screening reception catered by University of Guelph’s Hospitality Services. Led by Canada’s Forest Therapy Guide and Trainer\, participants experience a walk intended to open the senses\, deepen a connection with the natural world\, and enhance wellbeing. \nBen Porchuk is the co-founder of the Global Institute of Forest Therapy. He has led over 250 forest therapy walks in several countries around the world. \nFee: $60 (plus HST) per person if you register before the early bird deadline of September 3\, 2024. SUMMARY:Critical Relationalism by Design
DESCRIPTION:Métis professor and architect Dr. David Fortin will discuss an emerging positionality in design away from human-centred thinking and instead towards the enhancement of all life. Framed as an evolution from earlier emphases in architecture focused on Critical Regionalism\, or the emphasis on design informed by geography\, Critical Relationalism instead asks what relationality means in design and how this can guide intentions when approaching the design process. \nDavid Fortin is a Professor at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture and a registered architect in the provinces of Ontario\, Saskatchewan\, British Columbia\, and Alberta. He completed his doctoral studies at the University of Edinburgh in 2009 and has since taught undergraduate and graduate courses in architectural design\, history and theory\, in the UK\, USA\, and Canada. David was the inaugural Associate Director of the Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute and the Director of the McEwen School of Architecture at Laurentian University from 2018-2021. Raised in Alberta and Saskatchewan\, he is now a citizen of the Métis Nation of Ontario and member of the RAIC Indigenous Task Force. He has twice been selected with colleagues to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale (2018\, 2023) and in 2024 was named an Emerging Voice by the Architectural League of New York. His research and practice focus on questions surrounding speculative futures\, Métis architecture and design\, and the relationship between design and reconciliation. As an architect and consultant\, he has worked with Indigenous communities across the lands now known as Canada\, prioritizing their values and voices throughout the various initiatives.

SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping | Marking Time: Tour of the Old Stone Quarry Site at the Guelph Correctional Centre
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk and conversation with AGG Director Shauna McCabe and researcher and past chair of Heritage Guelph\, Brian Skerrett\, as they discuss the layered histories at play in Guelph\, with a focus on the site of the stone quarry on the grounds of the Guelph Correctional Centre (Ontario Reformatory). This dialogue will delve into the connections between geologies and geographies as well as between natural and built environments. \nWorked by those incarcerated at the Reformatory\, not only does the stone quarry expose layers of rock that reveal the earth’s stratigraphy and fossil records\, in this case a prehistoric reef\, the quarries became part of the cultural landscape as materials extracted were used to build local architecture\, influencing the aesthetic and structural characteristics of the region. \nThis tour is presented in conjunction with the AGG’s recent exhibition Yours in Native Spirit: Richard Bedwash\, curated by Shauna McCabe and Colinda Clyne\, as the Anishinaabe artist served a term there in the 1970s\, part of the intricate narrative that connects his work\, his life\, and the city of Guelph. \nNote that to access this site\, participants must walk over uneven ground for approximately 15 minutes and there are no washroom facilities on the site. In the case of extreme weather\, this walk will be rescheduled and any changes will be communicated by email to those registered. \nPartners\nPresented by the Art Gallery of Guelph as part of AGG’s Walking as Remapping program with the support of the University of Guelph’s Wellness@Work program\, in partnership with the Department of Geography and School of English and Theatre Studies.

Where do we turn to access the voice of our deepest wisdom? \nTake a break and join us for a fresh\, fall breeze Classical Yoga class (FREE) on U of G’s beautiful\, historic\, sprawling Johnston Green\, on Tuesday\, September 24 at noon. As we harvest the fruits of summer\, the natural world begins to fall away in preparation for renewal. At this moment\, we invite you to turn toward the light (inner sun) within us as the physical light outside starts waning. Harmony\, balance\, and the opportunity to let go of what no longer serves us are the offerings of the equinox and our practice. \nNote: Try not to eat at least one hour before your yoga practice. \nAll abilities and ages are welcome to participate. Chairs will be provided. The event is open to all – staff\, faculty\, students\, alumni\, and visitors. \nRemember to bring your yoga mat and water bottle!
