DESCRIPTION:The Theatre Studies Department at the University of Guelph presents “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.” The production is quickly approaching on November 21\, 22\, and 23 at 7 p.m. and will be held in the Arts Research Centre (ARC) Theatre in the MacKinnon Building at the University of Guelph. \n“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” by Jay Presson Allen\, based on and adapted from the novel by Muriel Spark\, is a timely exploration of a brilliant and charismatic teacher who has full control over her students\, her “crème de la crème.” She pushes them into “heroic action\,” which\, as it turns out\, has dire consequences for some. Set in 1930s Scotland against a backdrop of rising political tensions\, this relevant work prompts the audience to consider issues of trust and leadership. \nThis production is directed by School of Theatre\, English\, and Creative Writing faculty member and renowned Canadian playwright Professor Judith Thompson. \nPerformance and production work is by third and fourth year Theatre Studies students. The production also features Stephanie Jones\, a Theatre Studies PhD student in the title role of Jean Brodie. Stephanie brings many years of professional experience to the role. Professor Thompson is assisted by PhD student Erin O’Brien. \nWe hope you can join us for one of the three evening performances. \nThe ARC Theatre is an 80 seat performance space with flat access and proximity to an accessible washroom. The majority of the seating is tiered with limited floor-level seats. \nThis performance contains bright lights\, lighting shifts\, and some sudden noises. It also contains themes of control and power\, grooming and bullying behaviours\, references to war and death\, and depictions of intimate/sexual contact as well as references to sexual and physical abuse and historical opinions and beliefs. \nIt runs just over two hours including a 15 minute intermission. \n“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French\, Inc. \nFor tickets\, more information\, and to support the production\, please visit the Eventbrite page.

SUMMARY:Creating Ethical Space for First Nations-led Genetic\, Epigenetic\, and Other Biological Health Research
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences in the College of Biological Science is pleased to host Dr. Billie-Jo Hardy from the University of Toronto and Dr. Amy Bombay from Carleton University. They will be speaking about their experiences developing a biological health research training program with First Nations health professionals and researchers. \nBoth researchers will present virtually\, but there will be an in-person viewing option\, with refreshments available. \nDr. Amy Bombay is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Carleton University. Amy is Anishnaabe (Rainy River First Nations) and her primary areas of research have focused on assessing the associations between multigenerational trauma\, contemporary stressor exposure\, and cultural identity and engagement in predicting health and wellness among Indigenous Peoples. Her research exploring the different pathways by which Indian Residential School experiences are transmitted across generations has garnered extensive media interest and has influenced policy and practice related to Indigenous health and well-being. \nDr. Billie-Jo Hardy is an Assistant Professor with Social and Behavioural Health Sciences and Associate Director at Waakebiness Institute for Indigenous Health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health\, University of Toronto. She is also an Affiliate Scientist at the Well Living House at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at Unity Health Toronto. Her interests are in public health\, research ethics\, health equity and community-partnered research and she has experience in global and Indigenous health research. \nThe College of Biological Science Community Seminar Series is designed to promote the work and visibility of biologists from equity-deserving groups\, increase awareness of barriers to inclusion facing biologists\, and provide opportunities to learn about equity\, diversity and inclusion. DESCRIPTION:Food Justice on Campus: Racialized Student Food Insecurity in Digital Stories \nDate: Thursday\, November 28\, 2024 \nTime: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. \nLocation: ImprovLab at the University of Guelph (MacKinnon Building\, Room 108) \n——- \nRacialized and Indigenous peoples are facing unprecedented rates of food insecurity across Turtle Island (North America). Even at the University of Guelph\, Canada’s Food University\, students from racially and ethnically marginalized backgrounds struggle to access the foods required for nutrition\, enrichment\, and cultural connection. Taking seriously the impacts this has on the overall health of the students and the University community\, we are inviting students\, staff\, and faculty across campus to participate in our screening workshop Food Justice on Campus: Racialized Student Food Insecurity in Digital Stories. \nAbout the Workshop\nIn this interactive workshop\, we will engage in critical conversations about how to promote food justice on campus by watching and reflecting on four short creative videos on the intricacies of race\, culture\, food\, and student living. Participants will be invited to an active and supportive environment to take part in a diverse\, embodied\, and creative dialogue about the food crisis facing racialized and Indigenous students especially\, and the student population more generally. Following the workshop\, participants will also be invited to share their own stories over good food and good vibes. Dinner will include a vegan hearty stew and an authentic Ghanaian chicken and rice dish catered by Community FEWD (Food Equity With Dignity). \nThere are a limited number of in-person spots available\, and the workshop will also be livestreamed over Zoom. After which\, we will walk over to The SEED warehouse and get a tour of their facility which is host to a number of great community rooted projects and programs. Following our tours we will walk to the Double Rainbow Cafe where Chef Yasi’s team at FEWD (Food Equity With Dignity) will be set up and ready to provide some great eats and then to the Alice Block Condo kitchen condo space where there will be time to eat our dinner together while networking with each other! \nA couple notes: this event will include a lot of walking\, if you prefer to attend a certain part(s) of the evening\, feel free to meet at whichever spot is best for you at the time specified on the Agenda and we will be just as happy to have you. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Cediel Becerra is an advisor and mentor for the Colombian National Health Institute for the Frontline course of the field epidemiology training program on One Health\, and co-editor of the CABI One Health journal on One Health\, Gender and Feminism. She co-founded the Biodiversity and One Health community of practice\, a multidisciplinary group created to advocate for the inclusion of One health approach in the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans for Latin American countries. \nShe will be discussing how mapping stakeholders and initiatives is laying the groundwork for One Health implementation in Latin America and is a best practice for One Health governance. This will strengthen a pre-existing installed capacity for multisectoral cooperation mechanisms in Latin America and will help the region be better prepared to face future health emergencies. \nRegister to attend virtually or in-person.

SUMMARY:In Conversation with Susan Mogul
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging conversation with pioneering video artist Susan Mogul\, who will discuss her 1997 video I Stare at You and Dream\, featured in AGG’s exhibition Do You Remember Love\, as well as her wider practice. Known for intertwining autobiography with documentary strategies\, Mogul’s work often explores themes of family\, relationships\, and identity through a deeply personal lens. \nFilmed in Mogul’s Highland Park neighborhood in Los Angeles\, a predominantly working-class Latino area\, I Stare at You and Dream follows the intersecting lives of four individuals: Mogul herself; her friend\, Rosie Sanchez; Rosie’s teenage daughter\, Alejandra (Alex) Sanchez; and Ray Aguilar\, Mogul’s on-and-off boyfriend. The narrative is intimate\, intertwining familial and romantic relationships to explore how personal history shapes the present\, inviting us to consider questions of women’s identity\, family dynamics\, and the search for a sense of home. \nSusan Mogul has been involved with video since the early 1970s\, creating a foundational body of humorous and staunchly feminist performance videos before expanding into experimental narratives\, including feature-length work. Her numerous accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and an ITVS commission. Her work has been showcased internationally\, with a survey of her videos held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna in 2024\, and her first solo museum exhibition at the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2022. Other notable exhibitions include California Video at the Getty Museum\, Los Angeles: Birth of an Art Capital at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz. \nMogul’s work has also been discussed in X-TRA (2020)\, where “A Feminist’s Survival Index” reviews her current work within the context of feminist art history. Her career and contributions are further explored in Women of Vision: Histories in Feminist Film and Video\, where a chapter is devoted to her impactful legacy. \nThis program is co-presented with Ed Video Media Arts Centre with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council\, an agency of the Government of Ontario.

DESCRIPTION:This is a two-part course that will introduce you to the wonders of growing all kinds of different plants from seed and will draw on Robert Pavlis’ experience growing over 2\,000 species of plants from seed. \nPart 1: Fundamentals of Seed Germination\nThis first part will look at the basics of seed biology to really understand the development of a plant from seed. This knowledge will then be expanded to discuss important topics such as collecting your own seed and storing seed for future growth. We’ll have an in-depth look at seed dormancy and different ways of overcoming it. \nWe’ll then look at some specific examples like germinating petunias\, peonies\, jack-in-the-pulpits\, and maple trees. These will provide insight into different types of seed germination processes. \nPart 2: Practical Aspects of Seed Germination\nDescription: Now that you understand the fundamental basics it is time to look at the practical aspects of growing from seed. We’ll look at different techniques such as growing in pots\, the baggy method and winter sowing. We’ll examine ways of dealing with very small and very large seed\, and I’ll show you techniques for scarification and stratification\, as well as some tricks for overcoming seed dormancy. \nWe’ll also look at essentials such as lighting\, temperature\, watering and hardening off seedlings. \nAt the end of this two-part course you will be able to germinate thousands of different seeds including both outdoor and indoor plants. \nFee: $20 (plus HST) per person.

We will cover identification clues\, behavior\, nesting info\, habitat\, foraging techniques and more. Cottage projects and activities that help birds will also be a part of each session as well as a 10-15 minute discussion period for bird-related questions. SUMMARY:Introduction to Animal Tracking (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what made those marks in the snow? In this full day program we will be learning how to track animals. We will be studying the tracks and signs of Ontario mammals and other types of wildlife. By the end of the day you will learn to identify and interpret animal tracks by looking at track patterns and gait analysis. The workshop will also include an introduction to scat identification. There is an outdoor component that will have us looking for and following animal tracks and trails. Please dress in layers to be outdoors and wear comfortable\, warm boots. Recommended: Bring a notebook and a measuring tape to help with track identification. \nThe Arboretum Mammal booklet is included in the registration fee. \nFee: $97 (plus HST) per person if you register by the early bird deadline of January 30\, 2025. After January 30 the fee is $107 plus HST.
