The symposium will take place on Thursday May 23 in the Ontario Veterinary College’s new learning wing\, room ECLA 1720\, with an online livestream via Teams. \nWe are planning an amazing day of speakers and presentations\, including Dr. Chand Khanna of Ethos Veterinary Health\, Animal Clinical Investigation and The Oncology Service as this year’s keynote speaker. Also joining us will be Dr. Albiruni Razak from University of Toronto and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre\, and local speakers TBA. \nVisit the ICCI Cancer Research Symposium website for more details on the event along with links for registration and abstract submission. Nature Journaling is a great way to connect more deeply with nature and learn to strengthen your skills of observation. Designed for beginners of all ages\, this workshop will teach you the fundamentals of nature journaling and give you the skills to start your own nature journal. Much of the day will be spent outside\, getting hands on practice with nature journaling\, as well as some in-classroom time focusing on theory. SUMMARY:Gairdner Microbiome Symposium: Exploring Nutrition\, Health and Culture through a Microbiome Lens
DESCRIPTION:The University of Guelph’s College of Biological Science will be hosting the Gairdner Microbiome Symposium on June 20\, 2024\, in partnership with the Gairdner Foundation. \nThe human gut microbiome has garnered enormous interest in the past two decades\, both from scientists and the general public. The gut microbiome refers to the collection of microorganisms – bacteria\, viruses\, yeast and more – that make their home within our intestines. Damage to the gut microbiome has been shown to be associated with\, and even cause\, a growing number of diseases\, including cancer\, diabetes\, obesity and allergies. \nDiet is a major driver of gut microbial health and activity. Since everyone harbours a gut microbiome that is unique to them\, understanding how our diets are transformed by our own microbes is a complex problem in personalized medicine\, but one which stands to revolutionize medicine\, if it can be harnessed effectively. \nThe Gairdner Microbiome Symposium will explore the role of the microbiome in medicine and nutrition\, as well as the impacts of culture and industrialization on our gut microbiomes. \nThe day-long event will feature three speakers including: \n\nPrecision Microbiome Medicine\, presented by Dr. Jack Gilbert\, Professor of the Department of Pediatrics and Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego\, President of Applied Microbiology International and winner of the 2023 IFF Microbiome Science Prize\nAre Microbes the Missing Ingredient in Celiac Disease?\, presented by Dr. Elena Verdu\, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair\, associate director of the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute and director of the Axenic Gnotobiotic Unit at McMaster University\nMissing Microbiomes and Where to Find Them: Bridging Science and Advocacy with the Yanomami People\, presented by David Good\, PhD candidate in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Guelph\, Explorer’s Club 50 awardee 2023\, and founder of the Yanomami Foundation\n\nThere will be a Q&A session with the speakers\, a research poster competition for trainees\, and lab tours of the University of Guelph’s Summerlee Science Complex. \nThe event is free and open to researchers\, students\, professionals and the general public. SUMMARY:Walking as Remapping: Night Walk in the Moth Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join the artists for a nighttime walk to the garden under the full moon at Ignatius Farm where participants will spend time observing the vibrant world active during the nighttime as well as their own sensory responses to the night. Guided by the artists\, participants will explore how to shift their sensory perception\, and consider how other beings\, like moths\, sense the world. \nParticipants will meet in the parking lot and the walk to the garden is about 15 minutes along a gravel roadway with mowed grass paths which have some uneven surfaces and slight to moderate inclines. Because the garden and walk involve encounters with other beings in their own sensory worlds\, please avoid the use of insect repellants and other scented products. Bug suits will be available\, or you are welcome to bring your own. We also recommend wearing long sleeves. \nPlease check your email in the afternoon if the weather looks ominous as we will be in touch as soon as possible if we plan to reschedule. We are tentatively holding June 23 at 9 p.m. as a rain date. Otherwise\, we will be outside for the program and so encourage you to dress for the weather with comfortable footwear for walking. DESCRIPTION:This full-day program helps participants refine their skills to identify trees in Ontario. The focus of the workshop is on learning the important identification characteristics of difficult tree groups such as the cherry\, oak and walnut families as well as the easier groups such as ash and maple. The afternoon is spent outside identifying trees in the forest as well as young cultivated trees with their Eurasian counterparts in the World of Trees collection. Participants are encouraged to bring their field guides and binoculars. But with big advances in AI technologies\, there are also important ethical considerations\, such as data security\, privacy\, and safety. Set yourself up for success this NSERC Discovery Grant season! This retreat will provide you with dedicated training\, structured writing time\, and individual writing support. SUMMARY:#HopeAndHealingCanadaCommunity Weaving Workshops with Tracey-Mae Chambers
DESCRIPTION:Join Guelph’s 2024 Artist in Residence\, Tracey-Mae Chambers\, at the Art Gallery of Guelph to contribute to a community weaving project. Sparking conversations about reconciliation\, her ongoing initiative called #HopeAndHealingCanada has developed through workshops and textile installations across the country since 2021. Add your favorite colour from the materials provided and help weave our community together! Participants can also create a 4-inch round weaving project to take home. \nThis is a drop-in program with no registration required; all necessary materials are provided by the artist. All ages are welcome\, though participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
